The victory of the Blu-ray high definition format may be shortlived if a Vancouver, BC-based company has anything to say about the matter. Internet Media Technologies has announced that it plans to install 1,000 satellite-linked kiosks in September at which consumers will be able to connect flash drives or MP3 devices and quickly download any of 3,000-5,000 movies to rent. Users will also be able to download music and TV shows instantaneously. "DVDs and CDs are going the way of Beta and VHS tapes," company CEO Romeo Prescott told Home Media magazine.

You can add another movie download service into the mix.

Meh, it will be nice to have it if it works, but there is still no way that it will completely replace DVDs or Blu-ray.
I'm sure I speak for many when I say that I'd prefer having movies in my collection that I can pop into a player and watch whenever I choose. But with downloads, where are these going to be stored? The consumer will have to stock up on hard drives, and if one of them flatlines you lose your whole collection of movies. No thanks.

Sounds kinda cool. But I can't find a slot on my TV to plug in the flash drive or MP3 device into

Skyhawk I think the idea is to plug the USB drive into your PC and watch on your TV if you have the 2 hooked up. Also you could plug the USB drive into your PS3 and watch it off there. I don't know about the 360.
Still unless if it's hidef (which would require huge capacity USB drives) I don't see how they can beat places like amazon.com, XBOX live, whatever service Playstation has, etc for downloading. Maybe they're targeting the DVD market and it will be cheaper than rentals? Who knows.

I don't have an HTPC, but I bet my PS3 could play it since it has USB. For rentals though, buying the card even if several hundred dollars would be a one-shot deal. It would be cool not having to go all the way to the video store to pick up a new release HD title, only to find out they're already rented out! I hate Rogers Video for only buying 1 to 3 copies of new release HD DVD or Blu-ray titles! It's like 2 weeks before I can get my paws on it.
So yeah, I'd go for this kiosk thing for sure. As long as it didn't take half an hour to download onto the USB compatible flash card, with another 3 hour wait in line at the kiosk.

FYI... more "Kiosks" news & Blu-ray!

> DVDPlay Offers Sony Blu-ray Rentals in Kiosks
DVDPlay broke new ground May 28, announcing it would begin offering Blu-ray Disc titles in its kiosks starting in June.
“The focus of this strategic decision is to prepare for the long term success and sustainability of the kiosk and ultimately give consumers what they want. We have an extremely adaptable product,” said DVDPlay CEO and chairman Chuck Berger. “Recognizing the mainstream adoption of Blu-ray and offering it to our customers is something we were able to turnaround quickly.”
The trial run will start in Northern and Southern California, Denver, and the Great Lakes area. The first Blu-ray titles available will be from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, with Untraceable and Men in Black popping up first. If the trial works in those areas with Sony Blu-rays, Berger said “we’ll expand to all studios.”
Perhaps most important is that the rental cost for a Blu-ray will be the same as a DVD - $1.49. But Berger said that might not last. “If we see [success] we might revisit [the price], because it does cost us more to stock them,” Berger said.
And I wonder if REDBOX (since 2002) will follow too. - Jimi

Falcon... ^this announcement above is for the regular BD physical disc release - another rental distribution, like those for DVDs (kiosks) - and NOT for 'burning' HD editions on a recordable BD disc... if that's what your message is referring to above.
I added the news to this thread, since it's somewhat related, about KIOSK distribution.
