I hate to post this (since I'm an HD-DVD supporter) but I read on highdefdigest.com that allegently (sp.) Circuit City is letting HD-DVD owners swap their at full price (receipt required) their HD players for BD players. Only hardware, no software. IDK if is true, but since a lot of people were crying because only in Europe and Japan Sony was doing that, I thought such people would like to know.

Hardly call it EXCHANGING.
Try bringing your HD DVD player back with the receipt and they will give you that much off of a Blu Ray player.
Still plan to add another $200 to $500, in addition to the exchange, to land a decent profile 1.1 Blu Ray player.
No refunds for the HD DVD movies though, feel free to buy all new ones on Blu Ray at regular price.

Videocipher I have no plans on getting rid of my old Toshiba A1....but I think this is a good offer. If some poor bastard is pissed about HD DVD losing than he gets all his money back....kind of a no brainer. In my case I bought the A1 for $400 when it first came out....and $400 will get someone a brand new Samsung BDP-1400, which is a pretty nice Blu Ray deck if you don't care about all the profile 2.0 crap.

Still, it's a nice gesture given the retailer and/or perhaps the BDA is paying for this. The number of HD DVD adopters are so low in potential revenue (and yes Blu-ray too), they could have much more easily said "F-YOU!" to former HD DVD owners and asked for a premium!
I think it's a cute and nice gesture... but being a realist I know it's a gesture to make headlines and talk. The corporate world is much like politics, and image is a very important aspect in marketing. They may lose money doing this, but it makes the free headlines.

I'll trade in my more expensive laserdisc player - if they give me credit for its full MSRP value ($999.99). That would give me enough to get a 2.0 profile blu-ray player - and a few blu-ray movies!

I called my local CC last night about this after reading it and they know nothing about it. Sounds like just FUD to me.
