Sadly I'll have to pass on the VMD player because all 3 of my HDMI inputs are used up already.

What with profiles 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0?

Sorry - couldn't resist

Hi Tim - How ya doing?

ReaggieP... strange(?) that you left out the rest of the quotation (from BRDA President Andy Parsons) when posted your comment (page 1). Here's what you failed to include...

“When you mass produce blue lasers in large quantities, hardware costs will absolutely come down,” Mr. Parsons said. “I’m sure we’ll eventually be able to charge $90 for a Blu-ray player.”

So that's very good news to some of 'poor folks' here on the Msg Bd who gripe about $399 Blu-ray player prices (PS3 etc).

These players are already available on PCRush.com. They only sell the players, no movies. I really want to pick one up because I believe the format could be a huge success, if NME plays their cards right and gets studio and retail/rental support. I ordered one a while back, but I had to cancel the order due to some financial issues. All that is better now, so maybe I will replace my order.

As soon as I do get around to ordering my HD VMD player, I'll post a review of it's upconverting capabilities and how the actual HD VMD movies look.

Does anyone happen to know of any non-US online DVD stores that sell HD VMDs? I want to pick up some US movies and the Lord of the Rings trilogy when they come out, but I can't buy those movies direct from NME.

By the time this happens people will go to work in 'hover cars' and I'll exist only as a hologram to give my children advice.

I can't say I know much about blue laser technology, but I am very curious to see whether or not the same HD quality can be achieved with old red lasers. If so, why were blue lasers ever produced? I hope DVDTOWN is as open to this format as they were to HD DVD and BLU, because I'd love to see if it's any good. $17 discs seems very appealing, especially considering that's the price while the format is new. It would probably drop eventually.

The colour of the laser (thus, the size of the "dot" on the disc) has nothing to do with quality, everything to do with capacity. We can have red laser 1080p movies - the problem is, on a standard DVD they would have to last only 20 minutes. HD VMD by-passes that issue by putting together many layers written with a red laser.

Each layer has 5GB and NME claims that they will be able to go up to 20 layers per disc, or possibly even per side. If this is true -- and if the format lasts -- this could make HD VMD become a viable gaming medium (which I believe it already is).

Funny, when I looked at the link on Amazon, it shows other products that customers who bought items like this also bought:

The Shining HD-DVD
Top GUn HD-DVD
Casino HD-DVD
DragonHeart HD-DVD

Funny how no Blu Ray products show up. I guess when you already own a winner product, you don't need to look for something "almost as good"

Funny - If you press the right arrow you'll see

Blood diamond (Blu Ray)
2001 (Blu Ray)
The Last Samurai (Blu Ray)
the Rock (Blu Ray)
Crimson Tide (Blu Ray)

That's it - Now I can't trust anything you post

BR players will come down and here's why. (speaking as an international business major for three years)
economy of scale dictates that the longer you produce a product and the more you produce, the more discounts you receive for bulk shipping, more efficient worksmen/women, hell just read the article. It only takes between 2-4 years generally to reach an economy of scale before price is dropped by other factors such as new technology, cheaper parts, smaller cases/parts etc.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economies_of_scale

now that the market isn't as split as it was, one company can focus on making the lenses, one for the cases, one for the chips, and so forth. Each company has it's strengths, just like how columbia makes lots of coffee at a really cheap price. Economy of scale. So now that there is only one format, mass production can finally begin.
