Heck man, my dad still has his JBL's from the 70's and some BOSE 901 V series speakers that sound AMAZING still. He got them really cheap from his friend, who got them in Germany when he was in the Army.
IIRC, the JBL's were $300 a pair at the time, circa 1975-76.

My two front-end speakers are from 1979 and they still work like a charm.

I well remember the old JBLs of the '70s. As I recall, they projected a very strong (elevated) upper midrange, which gave them lots of pizzazz, lots of umph, lots of "presence," plus a bit of an elevated midbass that gave them the impression of producing lots of sock at the low end. One of my best friends loved them, but I never cared much for the colorations they introduced to the sound.
Now, I may have mentioned that I used to have in my stereo music system (but not in my home theater room) a pair of speakers my wife and I bought in 1972. They were Fulton Js (I know, a name nobody recognizes, from FMI, Fulton Musical Industries). The old Fultons were an audiophile speaker of the day, "Stereophile" magazine's number-one choice for a time, using downward firing woofers and electrostatic tweeters. We used them from 1972 until 2006, when we decided to move along. The Fultons still played great, but I finally decided I just wanted something new and bought a pair of VMPS RM40s from a friend and designer, Brian Cheney. I hope to have the VMPS's for at least as long as I had the Fultons.
Old is not always bad.

As I said, Steve, old ain't necessarily bad.
I have a pair of little AR speakers sitting in the garage that I had from before my wife and I got married in 1972. They were still working fine when I disconnected them from our upstairs system a few years ago.

Well...old may not be bad....but if often LOOKS BAD if you know what I mean. As far as I am concerned speakers are another form of furniture/decoration in my house, I don't want some antique looking crap laying around.

Then you wouldn't like most of the furniture in my house!
Actually, the front cover is off because they are currently out being redone in a nice new gray speaker fabric at a speciality shop. The original fabric is a very '70s orange red.
