WOW...

Thanks DJ.

Much better ending. WB continues to show their inconsistencies by NOT having that ending and throwing HD DVD under the bus.

Not quite. The two-disc set I just reviewed, plus the Blu-ray edition and the upcoming HD DVD edition all contain both the original theatrical version of the movie and the alternate version with the so-called "controversial" ending. You get them both.

SPOILER:
Personally, I've never read Matheson's 1954 novel, but I much prefer the ending WB went with theatrically (which, by the way, is almost identical to the old "Omega Man" ending in concept) than the softer, happier, more "Hollywood" ending of the alternate version. To each his own, I suppose.

The new ending is really bad...not only does it not make sense with the reaserch he has done and the conclusions he's come to, but it's a lame ending...I would call it the search & rescue ending...

I also agree that the theatrical ending is more original and makes more sense with the whole movie overall...even when we don't know how the SUV got out of the island...

While I realize that I Am Legend will be released on HD DVD also, the "under the bus" comment referred to WB's dumping of the HD DVD format and going with the big payoff.

Further...

I have read Richard Matheson's novel and believe that WBs should have stuck to the original concept in the theatrical release. Wolfen's a sucker for happy endings. As you said, John "To each his own, I suppose."

Tim,

One of the things I meant to mention in my review (but Jason covered it, anyway) was the fact that the new zombie-vampires look more frightening than ever yet somehow more CGI phony, too. Can't win, I guess.

wolfen,

I wasn't too keen on either ending, to tell you the truth, but if you say the alternate ending is more in keeping with the tone of the book, I could go with that. I wonder if WB just wanted their theatrical release to keep with the same type of ending they had in their old "Omega Man," maybe just for the sake of consistency. I dunno. In any case, the studio now provides both versions, so people can take their choice.

I actually like both endings. However, I agree with John, in that if they had used this "original ending" in the theatrical release, the film would have had less of an emotional impact at the end. I think they made the right choice in the cut they chose, but it was cool to see a different ending showing the zombies' humanity wasn't entirely lost.

I liked it. I thought it made more sence. The other ending I found to be a bit forced. I would have liked that they ended it it with them pulling in vermont like the theatrical ending. What I enjoyed the most about this one is that the zombies almost leaching on to his neck. That brought back the Aliens sensation!!! That was cool...
