Oppo will soon introduce a new upconverting player which uses the Anchor Bay VRS chip which I think is the same one used in the Toshiba A-35. The article implies that it would be a viable alternative to Blu Ray for some.

If this machine is going to sell for $399, then how much is the upcoming Oppo Blu Ray player going to cost? I'm potentially very intrested in the BD player but I hope we don't end up with another high priced deck with limited consumer appeal because of affordability. Another one of those we don't need.

I wouldn't mind checking this box out, when it goes retail... see if it's even close to emulating a GOOD hidef 'perception' (which is open to different interpretation for each viewer). If it's retail price is anything BETWEEN $100-$150... it better show DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS compared to the current $50 upconverters- saturating the market today.

Again: DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENTS being a 'perception' that differs to every viewer. If it's TRUE that it will retail for $399... then what's the use?

Ok, the key word in this thread is UPCONVERTING. And like Stone Cold says....."thats all I got to say about that."

Geez man, you guys are really acting silly, for $399 you can get a PS3, that plays BR PLUS upconverts as well or better than any other player on the market. i guess some people are hard headed.

The Samsung BDP-1400 Blu Ray deck also sells for $400....
Anyone that would spend $400 for a regular DVD player is nutz....why not just but an A35 or XA2 that will do just as good a job of upconverting plus play HD discs (if you can still find them lol).

$150 will get you an A35 right now...

Bosshog, That was my point all along. The Oppo is probably equal to the A35 in performance, seeing that it is using the same or similar chip. Better to grab an A35 now while you can still get them at a good price. The article called the Toshiba players doorstops, but that's stupid they are a really good buys at this point in time.

I can say for a fact my Oppo blows away my A35 at upconverting to 1080i. I will not say, however, that upconversion is a replacement for HDM. BUT... as I have stated in the past, upconversion done right (as my Oppo does) will be good enough for the average Joe. Plain and simple. Now, a $400 upconverting DVD player? Please. That is just plain wasteful.

Possibly, unless there ia a quantum inrease in PQ. As far as a comparison with the Oppo and A-35, I personally have no basis for comparison on this, so you could very well be correct. I have heard the opposite somewhere else, although I can't remember where.

Trust me. The whole reason I even dug further into comparing them was because when I first tried playing an SDVD in the A35, I could immediately tell... WITHOUT first watching on my Oppo. Granted, I am comparing at 1080i. Maybe 1080p is a different story.
