For example if I have a $200 upconverter why would I purchase another $200 (guessing) just for bonus features and 960p resolution.
Until BD players drop substantially in price the average Joe is going to stick with SD.
If DVD2 gets implemented on future SD releases by the time BD prices have dropped average Joe is going to have a nice collection of DVD2 discs.

Because a consumer would only pay HALF for a converter, while only losing 120 PIXELS, hardly visible to the naked eye (watching at a recommended distance), compared to a similar blu ray box- . 1080-960. That $200 figure for the VAPORWARE is about right... but I would guess it would go as low as $150...
In a scenario where you could get a super upconverter for over HALF the price of a blu ray box, while losing ONLY a fraction of the pixel count & STILL OVER THE 720P native format... Yeah, that's worth checking out. Notice I STRESS ON CHECKING OUT... since it would take A DRAMATIC VIEWING UPGRADE (from dvd) for me to consider this VAPORWARE. If it's close to showing 1080p VISUAL CANDY like my PS3 (in my perception, not yours... SINCE ALL OF YOU BLU FANBOYS ALREADY CONSIDERED THE ITEM INFERIOR), then $150 is a REASONABLE PRICE.
But I wouldn't pay anything more than that. Widen your choices people... it ain't gonna kill ya.

Just a though.
If the DVD forum finalize on DVD2 could it be implemented as an amendment thus making it a requirement for anyone producing DVD players or more importantly discs?

I don't think TOSHIBA got that memo.

What all the posters seem to forget, is that India and China together have over 2 billion consumers, most of whom would not consider spending $500-$600 for a BD player, however will be tempted by an under $200 HD VMD player. US + Europe have under 1 billion consumers, albeit more affluent ones. The studios will go where the profit is. Paramount, Warner and all will start releasing HD VMD movies as soon as the Asian markets ask for them. We will have two standards again, as had happened with TV in the past (and US customers got stuck with inferior NTSC, while smarter countries enjoyed decades of superior PAL) FYI, you can already buy the players on AMAZON for $210....

wait, so can dvd players play dvd2?
if so then it is just an hddvd movie that can be played on a regular dvd player but without the psuedo hd....
Talk about slapping a different name on the same package. the only bonus would be that a consumer could buy dvd2 in the eventuality that when they get a dvd2 player they can watch them in pseudo high def... wouldn't someone rather spend the money on the player before they bought the movies for it? I'm confused.... especially when i'm sure they will be offering ten free movies in regular dvd...o wait....

More importantly, will these new DVD disks play in our Blu-ray players?

What's the actual resolution of the video going to be, regardless of upconversion? 960p??

Even if they don't - blu players will still play your existing library with all the special features - depending on profile of course
