Cloverfield on DVD

hey... no Blu ray? WHAT!?

come on, for what I heard that movie wasn't worth it, so i don't think paramount wants to waste money producing BD disks of their flop.

Dude, this is far from a flop! They grossed $79,351,605 and their budget was 30,000,000... that is FAR from a flop.

Not to mention I would totally buy it on Blu-Ray. It's worth to put on BD Discs.

You would want to watch a film that has been run through filters to look as though it's from an SD handy cam in HD? So in effect you would be watching SD in HD. That's rather self defeating I would think.

Well when I saw it I thought it looked great.

Yeah, much like buying the "Grindhouse" movies! Gee, let's watch movies in HD that were filmed through filters of shit.

And no, I wouldn't say Cloverfield was a flop, either. Even film critics responded well to it as RT gives it a 77% rating. So yeah, not sure what you're hearing wii, but you might want to research a little first before you make a "flop" claim.

Anyone who has seen it has to admit that it isn't nearly as heavily filtered as Grindhouse was. Grindhouse was just over the top compared to this.

True, but the idea between all fims is they were made to have the PQ look cheap.

I agree "Cloverfield" isn't as bad as the "Grindhouse" movies in PQ. I get that each film has an intended, astistic approach ("Grindhouse" looks like old 70s films, "Cloverfield" looks like reality TV). All I'm saying is the overall PQ in these films is crap and not all polished like a cheesy blockbuster, such as "Tranformers".

you guys seem to forget that fox released "28 days later" on blu-ray even though the movie was shot in...SD VIDEO. LOL.

I didn't get to see Cloverfield even though I wanted to. It only lasted a week where I am, plus the bad comments I heard from people and media, I heard it was a flop. Now to me watching this movie with the jumpy "camcorder" effect in HD would be like watching The Blairwitch Project in HD. Is just not worth it.

Making slightly over $79 million for a $30 million is not a "big success" in Hollywood terms. For Hollywood it would have been a big success to at least make $120 million dollars for a $30 million budget. To consider this $79 mill. box office movie a big success money wise, cloverfield should have had a single-digit millions dollar budget.

Youhave to admit the only reason Cloverfield was a box office "success" (debatable) was because they used unknown actors to keep the budget low. If the producers had used known actors Cloverfield (at $79 million) would have been an undisputable flop.

They didnt use unknown actors b/c they were cheap. The movie was meant to feel real, like you are watching a home video of someone in the incident. JJ didnt want you to say, I hope Shia Labouef can get away from that monster. It was an enjoyable movie they had to have spent much more on marketing, which was genius.

Apparently the majority have a different opinion. 79-million may not seem like a lot in Hollywood terms, but there is still money to be made off of the DVD sales, therefore that number is obviously going to increase. In the end, for a low budget film, they will have done pretty fair -- maybe not great, but still worthy enough to not be considered a flop by any means.

well we all know Paramount arent doing anymore HD DVD releases (which came into effect at the start of March) & from what I've heard they wont start putting out titles on Blu Ray until the summer, so we'll have 4-5 months of SD only releases from Paramount. I'd expect Cloverfield on Blu Ray once they start releasing Blu Ray titles, so probably August. Expect the same for There Will Be Blood

Don't forget that the "79 million" is just for ONE country - the USA. Movies make hundreds of millions more when combining the box office receipts from ALL the countries the movie was exhibited in. Didn't Disney reveal that the first 2 Pirates movies alone brought in over 1 BILLION in worldwide combined box office receipts. And sometimes a movie that does so-so box office in North America might end up being a big hit in other countries, with a long time playing in theaters. (I remember that the 3rd Rambo movie did modest box office here, but was a MAJOR SMASH overseas, especially in Middle Eastern countries - maybe because of the Afghanistan setting).

Nice! - I'm glad I haven't rented the SD-DVD yet, as we heard yesterday of Paramount's forthcoming Blu-ray release schedule, and that CLOVERFIELD will be released in early June. According to various websites' info, here are some details -

This movie sucks. The documentary aspect just threw me off. I liked the "look" of the film, but filming your best friend right after his brother got wasted (along with other instances) just threw me off. It was as if I was watching a movie with the cameraman giving vocal instructions or something... save your money Hendrix.

Well, as I said above, it will be a RENTAL for me, and a FREE rental at that... a benefit of Blockbuster's TOTAL ACCESS online membership, which allows local in-store returns (of your online rentals), swapped with a FREE rental to take home. And my local Blockbuster store is now carrying about 50 Blu-ray movies (so far).

Why would you want this movie in Blu the video quality sucks from there camcorder usage in the movie ? And with the way they filmed it who would watch it more then once ! This movie could have been so much better...

Given that the whole point of this movie is that it was supposed to have been shot using a typical, consumer-grade camcorder, the widescreen, high-definition picture and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound seem more than a bit...misplaced?
