There is an issue with the Wii that makes it get hot when not powered on. It is WiiConnect24, if you leave that option on, then the Wii will look for updates and Miis while it is off. You can see if it is enabled if the power/standby light is orange, if it is red, then it is disabled. When the option is on, the internal blue led comes on when the system is trying to do something on auto pilot.
From what I have read, the wireless adapter in the Wii gets too hot because there are no cooling fans being used when the system is off. I found that my Game Cube memory cards were getting hot when the system was off, and after finding out about this, I set the WiiConnect24 option to off. I figure I can get firmware updates on my own whenever I need to. In severe cases, the heat has damaged some Wii's video cards.
