Monopoly? Put the crack pipe down! If it were a monopoly than Sony would be the only one making BR players.

Tim, though i always repect your "pro Blu Ray" propoganda, we have to get one thing straight. Blu ray, like the crack pipe, is only a tool of satisfaction purchased and used by the misinformed. Sony, or "the dealer" has been continually "cutting" the so called "blu-ray" with many other generic products. In essence, they are merely keeping for themselves, that precious Columbian "blurry" as it is called on the interwebs.
The public deserves to know that they are buying inferior "crack". It is time for Sony to stop charging everyone royalty fees and let others drop their prices. They aren't the only "connec'" in my "hood", ill tell you that much.

Do you feel better getting your little Blu-ray rant on? And now I'm acussed of spreading Blu-ray propaganda? You're an idiot! I don't even own a blu-ray player, nor do I own an HD player. At this time, I could care less about either format or who the greedy bastard is because they're ALL greedy IMO. What's old is someone, like yourself, has to come in here every f-ing day and make a thread about Hi-Def, Blu-ray, HD, PS3, etc., etc., etc. The war is over! Catch a clue and move the f**k on!

Your Pro Sony lifestyle is not protected by laws sir. I will challenge you to the very end you "beta" lover. I remember you saying Ps3 could also cook hotdogs, with a nice little picture of some old man readying himself to a movie and a meal. Well, shame on him and you sir. You think you are all so tricky, but I went to the store and i looked at a ps3 with my own eyes, and there was no grill involved whatsoever. I knew Sony would do something dastardly like that and pull the wool over our eyes just long enough for us to get the thing into our homes and hope we would forget to return it.
Not me. I'm smart enough to test a product first. And though, I come here to do research sometimes, I can never get by your little picture of the infamous grill. Well. thank you, for trying to confuse the public into buying Blu Ray. Since then, I have bought myself my own hotdog cooker and watch DVD's in my living room. i would thank you to never pretend that we can do both with one machine again. Lest I mark you as a paid Blu-ray propagandist.

When the stand alone Blu Ray players go to say 299.00 then I will say the prices have dropped. Until then, to me , prices have not dropped. I was in BEST BUY last week, and they had an open box Sharp Blu Ray player, and they were still charging 365.00 for the damned thing.

actually fr i'm much better looking.
anyhow rangooth,
nobody at sony attacked me.
however, the other day i was walking around campus smoking a cigarette when i got a phone call. It was from the doctor. He said i had lung cancer. Immediately i thought cigarettes. However, i keep my sony ericcson phone in my breast pocket and remembered something about cell phones causing cancer. So i did some research and discovered that they might, but i suspected sony might have paid for the scientists to say it was doubtful.
anyhow i put my phone in my bag and a week later i didn't have cancer.
so, along with drm, and failed formats i figured out that sony also causes cancer. Therefore Tim, every time you buy a BR movie you support cancer. Please stop killing people mr raynor.

Obviously you aren't known for your business sense. Do you think that others should drop their royalty fees too(?)... Microsoft (Windows), Toshiba (DVD), etc.
Patents, Royalties, Intellectual Properties etc produce revenue (fees) for a company's profits. Also, see how far you would get suggesting that your bank or credit-card company drop the various types of fees it charges for services, penalties, etc.

Companies will keep on charging what they want for mid to lesser quality items as long as they is people out there who will buy the product. I'm talking ANY product out there, not just BD. So we only have ourselves to blame.
Look at Nintendo back in the late 90's, the video game giant made the infamous Virtua-Boy which had 3D graphics and was supposed to be portable. In reality the monochromatic graphics (red and black) gave users headaches and the system was far from "portable". People didn't buy it and Nintendo was forced to stop productions within a few months of release. I know is a extreme example but the point is that if people decides to "speak up" by not purchasing a product, then companies will listen.

Blu-Ray player prices are not down, they did go up and are now stabilized at pre-Xmas pricing level.
No wonder HD-DVD players still outsell Blu-Ray players at the retail.

Deadmeat is correct. I've been watching the price of the Panasonic BDP30 since January on Amazon. It bounces all over the place from $411 in January to $499 now and MUCH HIGHER through a few rip off third vendors. We'll see what happens when the BDP-50 comes out. I'm interested in either of those or the Oppo when it materializes.

sorry tim and jimi i was pulling your leg a little here.
I'm just tired of reading the same thing i said to you guys.
such as prices are up, monopoly, sony "royalties", endless list of baseless rantings....
prices are only up right now because adoption is up, and there are less players to buy because companies did not expect such growth in the area. sales are up for hddvd because they are waging a massive blowout sale.
i'm a little sick of all the speculation on how sony sucks and how they are screwing the consumer. I have quite a few sony products now and have had none of them fail, compared to the other products i own, jvc, matsushita, hp computer(built a new one myself, sick of all the cheap parts and failures), acer, samsung, bose, apple(ipod, itunes [interference with other programs], old imac), panasonic tv, nintendo ds, original xbox, vista, windows xp, zune, lg dvdwriter, intel chip, radeon card, nikon camera, WD HDD, and so on, all have failed.
as far as my sony products go, my ps2 and ps1 still work. Ps3 plays great for games and movies. Sony Cybershot has had none of the problems my old cameras have had. A 6 year old DVD sony drive. Home theater speakers that have never blown out despite thesound level i keep it at during movie playback, and no trouble with the cabling and connections like i had with my old system, Digix. I bought a Sony Minidisc player back when they first came out. Used it for about a year, then got an ipod. Every year or so my ipod crapped out, or itunes messed up. During those off times i used the MD since it was small, held about 200 songs and had very loud, clear, output. Had a laptop with a sony battery that crapped out. they sent me a new one within a week.
I just don't get what the big fuss is, and i probably never will, when i know how much i have spent on failed products, compared to the sony products i've bought which still hold up, some of which after 5 years of use.
Now then, I have never gone out and specifically bought a sony product. It is not my intention to be loyal to one company. I simply buy something, which at the time is technologically new, or of great value. some of the things i own just happen to be sony. However, when things crap out, i instantly know it wasn't a sony product.
That's my deal, that's it.
I wish you would all stop condemning them for BR (incompleteness) or whatever is on the menu, when they have never let me down before, or if they had (the battery) made up for it right away with no hassle or extra payment.

How can it be speculation when almost everyone has had problems with every manufacturer. Sony walkman mp3 players are notorious for stopping playback and erasing files (on my third one). You get what you pay for. If Sony can mark the Ps3 for $399 and thier SA for $600 (price check on amazon) doesn't that raise a red flag?? The ps3 is the only one that is ready for 2.0, fast load times, ethernet connection, BD live ready and plays games, yet it is cheaper than all the SA players out there? It sounds to me that Sony is throwing the other manufacturers under a bus and outpricing their SA products (including thier own) to flood the market with PS3's and create a bigger market for the gaming aspect. Lose money on BD and make money with gaming.
This is my opinion and should only be taken as such.

Look, buying electronics of any brand is like buying fruit . . . it's a gamble. So you've had great luck with Sony products, obvious others have not. My first DVD player was a Sony and only lasted 4-years -- I might have expected longer due to the product name, but oh well, that's life. My Sony Home Theatre system lasted 5.5-years before taking a dump, but how do I know that's life span I should expect for the product?! I own a PS2 (refurbished), for 3-years now, and have still yet to see it go down -- but I do know other people that have had horrible luck with their PS2.
I'm certainly not on the Sony hate wagon, as others are, but I will admit I feel their "name" is overrated. Seems to me their products are hit or miss, but then so are other electronic brand names -- don't even get me started on Radioshack's "Realistic" brand!
What's tiring is not Sony itself -- it's the constant threads on these forums talking about Sony or Blu-ray or HD, etc., etc., ect. . . The format war is over kids, get new parts for your head and move on!

Sony HAS to price the PS3 aggresively or it wouldn't be able to compete with the 360. The decision to put the Blu player in the PS3 was a double-edged sword for Sony. On hand hand they had the Trojan Horse for the HD war, but they also had to price it to be competitive in the gaming market. Does this hurt other manufacturers that make Blu players?? Maybe, but most people I know buy dedicated decks for watching movies, not a gaming machine.

Loss is so great that SCEI could not make it back from gaming revenue.
Basically, Microsoft now controls the majority(60%) of next-gen game software revenue, with SCEI holding less than 18% share.
When there are multiplatform titles, gamers usually prefer Xbox 360 versions to PS3 versions since 360 versions are almost always better.

Sales of the PlayStation Portable were up by 1.1 million units to 5.8 million, though game sales for the console fell by 3 million to 18 million.
Despite the improved games performance, the division was still in the red due to the loss Sony incurs on each unit of the PS3 it sells.
"We have reduced losses on the PS3 due to production cost-savings but don't expect the game division to become profitable until the second half of the next fiscal year," Oneda said.
Now do you believe? Straight from the mouth of Sony CFO confirming SCEI still loses big chunk of money on every PS3 sold?

I never did argue the fact that Sony still sells its PS3 for a loss that it still is not yet making up on PS3 game revenues. However, there's no denying that game revenues are increasing while losses on consoles continue to shrink. In other words, they're following the XBox 360 financial model. So what?

funny how when you search for oneda saying that, it only comes up on one website, and when you type in ps3 goes into the black, you get about a hundred.
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6573&Itemid=2
and in this interview he says they are likely to post profit margin by the fiscal year (end of march 2008) if they can keep costs down and sell more units. Apparantly they had a record high recently and costs are way way down.
do you only get your news from one source deadmeat???
interestingly enough this is also when all these sites are saying that game division went into the black.

60% of next-gen game software revenue. <- This is what matters to game publishers and game players.
42% of next-gen total revenue including hardware, software, and peripherals.
But game publishers only look at game software revenue, since this is where they make their money and the determining factor in gamer's game console purchase. The fact is that the majority of games sold today are for Xbox 360.

Latest million seller, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, sold at a ratio of 3.7:1 on both consoles. When Xbox 360 version accounts for 77%~80% of game sales, it leaves game publishers no incentive to optimize or even put out a PS3 version.

In other words, they're following the XBox 360 financial model. So what?
Xbox 360 hardware has been profitable since fall 2006. Microsoft can drop the Arcade Edition to $199 right now and still break even.

PS3 may have a long life as a game player, but its future as a game conole is bleak.
Most of 3rd party game engines arriving in 2009~2011 are for Xbox 360/PC only. Even SCEI's own game engine is forced to support Xbox 360(SCEI's PhyreEngine supports Xbox 360 in an attempt to attract 3rd parties that have gone Xbox 360 centric. The selling point of PhyreEngine to 3rd party developers is that it would support PS3 better than other commercial game engines).

Well, no PS3 profits for SCEI in October 2008. Forthcoming price cut ate PS3 profits.
Funny, I missed the revised earnings outlook. Perhaps you know more about SNE's inside financials than the CEO?

Gents we have to take sales for game hardware and software with a grain of salt. I read an article in the last few days (can't remember where) saying that both the XBOX360 and the PS3 both claimed to be #1 in sales for the last 2 months.
Remember that companies love to manipulate data to mislead people into believing they are doing better than they really are. This is nothing new.

And that's exactly what I mean! It's so stupid for gents to get on a flame war over something that should be taken with a grain of salt. It isn't as if Skyhawk or Deadmeat are boardroom members of any of these companies, yet they're willing to fight tooth-and-nail over who's right nomatter what info they can dig up. It's pointless, simply pointless.

Speaking of lower Blu-ray prices (thread topic), I've noticed that Fox (or Amazon) has now lowered many of the (older) Fox catalog titles now to $17.95 - VIEW HERE - Note: the various $17.95-priced titles are mixed within the several pages of the overall Fox listings, so you'll have to click thru and scroll down thru 6 or 7 pages.
