I'm not impressed with Blu Ray, and I'm not being bias.
I am one of those customers who wants to just enjoy HD content period, and after viewing both BluRay and HDDVD in 2006 when I entered the market...I went with the superior media HDDVD. I can honestly tell you I have not regretted it either, because every movie I own is far superior in every aspect.
EVEN after HD DVD's demise the quality of HDDVD's continue to outshine anything BluRay has to offer. Every review I have read gives the HDDVD version of Beowulf better ratings. Every review I read about I am Legend, shows their are more features with the HD DVD version, and visual and audio qualities are better.
Has there been any recalls with HD DVD? NO! Has there been any customers alienated by HD DVD because they were early adoptors and their $1,000 machines can't play new movies? NO!
My friend brought his PS3 over to my house to try and convince me his version of Superman Returns was better than the HDDVD version I have (Disturbia and M:I-III as well). I don't know if its the shitty BluRay player in the PS3 or the movies, but HDDVD versions "Blu" every one of them out of the water.
With that said I'll go Bluray if the quality of the product becomes the quality I have enjoyed and expected for the last 18 months. Until then, I'll continue to purchase HDDVD until there's nothing else left to purchase.
I have vented. Now, Sony get your act together and make BluRay a fine product. You do it by the end of the year and you'll get me as a customer!!!

So I purchased the HD DVD version of 300 (I already have the DVD/HD DVD combo) for $10, brand new and sealed. Opened it up, threw it into my HD-A2 and it showed the Warner Bros logo and then BAM!
I got some error message that it cannot play the disc. I tried hardbooting the HD-A2 and still the same message.
It seems HD DVD is not perfect either.

Oh great... Superman Returns gets mentioned yet again!
FYI - this movie looks poorly on BOTH formats (not just Blu-ray only), have you not seen the reviews?
In HD-DVD's defense, M:I-3 is spectacular, and a great demo disc for HD-DVD (along with others such as 2 Fast 2 Furious, Constantine, 2001: A Space Odyssey etc). Likewise... 2001, Apocalypto, Cars, Pirates/Carribean 2, etc on Blu-ray are amazing too!!
Blu-ray DOES "have it's act together". Sorry you can't 'see' this! -LOL-

If the interactivity features are important to you, then you have a valid point there, but every reputable DVD review site notes that the visual quality of the HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs for the same films are equivalent, so you're bucking the professional reviewers there.
Many have also stated that the very very best demo discs for visuals are on Blu-ray (particularly Disney releases). Whether that's a bit rate factor or just their personal biases, though, is open for debate, of course.

Animation always looks the best so that's cheating. Heck even on DVD the Pixar movies looks GREAT. That's why the bit-rate can be so high on them is because there is less information/detail when compared to live-action filming. Less nuances and characteristics in animation.
This is not unknown in the industry.

Speaking of "I am Legend", I just received my copy tonight and will be watching is shortly. Question:
Should I watch it with the alternate controversial ending for the first viewing, or see it as in the theatrical release?
No spoilers please!

Skyhawk, watch the theatrical release first. Then watch the alternate ending.

We know all those things, and so does everybody else in this board...the only difference with this new larger-capacity-CDs (yes, it's what they are) is the storage capacity, with HD DVD's 30 GB against blu-ray's 50 GB...

I thought the theatrical ending was good. I've read peoples comments that said they thought the "alternate" ending was lame.

Not biased? - Then why did you state this...
As posters5 (Eddie) and others have mentioned here recently, it's the I AM LEGEND Blu-ray that has -more- features than the HD-DVD version - and I believe both have similar mastering, so should look identical.
Also, the Blu-ray of BEOWULF (UK) does include a lossless audio track, whereas the Paramount HD-DVD edition for North America does not. Either are fine with me, but there is a difference between the releases.
There's also an Australian Blu-ray edition coming April 9, and a Dutch Blu-ray edition (with Dolby TrueHD lossless track) arriving the same time (and Dutch HD-DVD later).

Hey, we just got through "I am Legend" and I must say that it seems they're getting better at this transfer thing (audio and video) on average with each passing month regardless if a new or catalog release (like that gorgeous "I Robot"
. I think we're going to see the day very soon when every new Blu-ray ends up in the top-tier, and we'll have to rethink our prior criteria for what's great.
That PQ was flawless, and I couldn't detect even a hint of edge enhancement artifacts (halos or ringing) or artificial "edginess" what so ever. Detail was excellent even though film grain was pretty much completely absent even in dark scenes, which is usually a contradiction in terms. There were times when I think I could see inside the pores on Smith's face during closeups. Not that this was a great thing...
But the audio was just as good if not better. My surrounds (and sub especially in the last part of the movie) were active all the time. It wasn't this "in your face" easy mix of simply putting one sound in your rear right, another one in your front left... etc. Some very talented people took a lot of time to mix something truly interesting here. Deer were running past me, and wavering calls almost made me open the drapes to see if birds like that morning dove were outside the house in real life. I kid you not. This was a great auditory experience. This was a top-tier TrueHD track IMO.
The movie itself? Hmm... well it was entertaining. I did really enjoy everything except for the last parts, but if I rant about it I'll definitely be giving away spoilers for sure. So I wont. The scenes of places I've actually been to and know well that had the wild grass, weeds, etc. growing out of the pavement and roads were very cool.
The visual and auditory experience of this and many other titles is so iimmersive though, I couldn't see myself thinking upconverted DVD was "good enough". Life is way to short!
I mentioned here we just listened to music last night. And coincidentally a lot of the music we choose for some reason was Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, including the titles chosen for the movie. We haven't sampled those song titles for months. That was weird!

Maybe because there is no North American Blu Ray version of Beowulf?

Really? Cause I'm not finding a SINGLE HD DVD review of I am Legend yet. I just used DVD Basen to search ALLL LOCALITIES. All that comes up? The Blu Ray and the SD SE. Links, please?

Hi Def Digest is saying the two transfers of Disturbia (with different encodes) look the same...disappointing. They also say the MI III discs look reference quality. So maybe it's your friends set up that's a problem, not the discs?

Jason,
You belong to the "Bullshit Hater's Club", too? I belong to that club, as well. I've been a member for over 25-years -- pretty much after I graduated High School. It's always nice to run into a fellow member. I do need to get a new picture on my membership card, though -- my old pic is from about 15-years ago. Nevertheless, awesome to meet a fellow member!

How many times must we hear about this price point? Online Features?
It is new technology, why do we have rediculous posts like this?
I for one won't buy a plasma HDtv until they are at least 200 for a 40", this whole move to HD programming is stupid. I got a 40" SD from my friend for free when he got a new tv. Until HDtv can offer me a deal like that, then it's no go for me sir.
I'm also sure that 90% of the people out there, won't buy a BR until they can chat with their friends online while watching a movie together.

There will never be a perfect sollution...no matter what format you choose to adopt, there will always be something offering a little more down the road...be it in consumer electronics, appliances, cars, whatever...this is what drives the economy...built in obsolescents...
I bough into HD DVD in November 2007 because it seemed to be the horse I wanted to back and I thought it would go the distance...it didn't...oh well, so sad...
But do I regret buying that Toshiba HD-A3 for $300 CDN? Not at all.
It allowed me to enjoy my HD TV with a greater variety of entertainment options. The BBC Planet Earth HD DVD was worth the investment alone for I can watch that series over and over and over again
True, the bottom fell out of the HD DVD marketing schema when Warner said they were going to go Blu exclusive...but you know what? Warner is still releasing what the said they would and for that I commend them...they don't need to.
Paramount and Universal couldn't drop the format fast enough and have left people in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD camps scratching our collective heads trying to figure out where their heads are at...all I know is I got stiffed on my Jack Ryan HD DVD set once again
There are and will be for the visible future a decent supply of titles available on HD DVD...not everything mind you, but enough for you to enjoy your investment as I have enjoyed mine.
Hell, if you don't mind paying a little more, you can even get titles on HD DVD from Europe that are either not available at all in North America on HD DVD or Blu-ray or are Blu-ray exclusive. T2 comes to mind and so does Reservoir Dogs and Crank...but my tastes in movie might differ from yours.
Or, buy a Samsung or LG combo player and future-proof yourself...I did and am loving every minute of it.
Or you can sit here and piss and moan into the wind about not finding a format or a player that does your sensibilities justice...suck it up buttercup and enjoy what is available and not what you think should be available.
True fans embrace the new and untested...fair-weather fans moan about not having their needs met all the time...which one are you choosing to be
