OOOooo I forgot about Evil Dead. This was one of the low budge. buzz worthy movies of my generation. A master peace in my opinion.
I agree that other make horror too. I do have one in my top 10 and one that was a remake of one.
But when it comes to horror movies I could sit here all day and write a top 100 list because I love them all.
By the way its nice to talk about movies on here instead of formats for a change.

Many great choices... and I will add THE GODFATHER
Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather - I remember renting the uncut LaserDisc a year out of high school, and watched it one night, by myself, and the true fear/horror I felt, which kept building throughout the film all the way to it's conclusion. At times, I felt an increased heart rate, and also I was sweating!
Remember, not only does this film contain many shocking scenes, but it has incredible tension, powerful musical score(!), and acting that gives the characters an realistic impact. So, yes, I consider The Godfather a 'horrifying' (scary) film experience, along with it's amazing (and depressing) sequel, The Godfather Part II.

Another great horrifying suspense film from 1976 (with powerful music score by Michael Small, and excellent cinematography by the late Conrad Hall)....

......................."Is it safe?"

(somebody's spoof poster above, with the Lawrence Olivier character from the movie, doing that scene's very memorable 'dental inspection', with the added inserted image of Hollywood junkie Lindsey Lohan).

I'm sick of the Exorcist being named scariest ever. Seriously, nodoby has been able to come up with a better/scarier movie in 35 years?? Pretty sad.
I feel that the exorcist and movies like it are extremely scary but only because of my spiritual beliefs. I believe that demonic possesion in real. I usually don't watch movies like that because I believe it opens you up to that realm. Monsters and aliens and such aren't as bad for me because I don't believe they exist. Just my opinion.
I also thought the Ring (the first one) was scary and so was The Descent. And no I don't believe in evil videotapes or blood-thirsty monsters living in dark caves (well except for some of the present members of the Bush administration)

chemteam, I actually really liked "The Descent". And I even bought it on Blu-ray. A surprisingly lovely high-def transfer too. I don't know what kind of reception the movie got, but perhaps I'll have to put that one under my "guilty pleasure" list.
Someone also mentioned "Hellraiser". I'd love to see that in Blu-ray.
Edit: Oh, I see Tony mentioned Hellraiser!

Skyhawk, what a hell of a chill ride Descent was, they are working on De2cent the second part to the orignal. It will take off were the original left off. After the woman survivor reaches a hospital she tells the authorities what happens and a resue team is dispatched to search for survivors, she also accompanies the rescue team to the cave.
