I agree Touching the Void is a RIVETING account those climbers faced! IT IS A MUST SEE Movie. I cannot share more comments on it without spoiling it! This movie deserves it's own thread entirely!

Well i would have to agree with most of the films mentioned i can't believe that some great ones were never mentioned yet.
Seven - though not a full on horror film it is filled with horror elements.
28 Days Later
The Sixth Sense - Again not a full on horror but definitely gives some hair raising moments.
Devil's Backbone - Del Toro's first film in his spanish civil war trilogy. with Pan's Labyrinth following it. but devil's backbone is a great ghost story.
The Mist...ok maybe not as classic as the others but i quite enjoyed it. definitely did its own thing compared to most horror films. far from perfect but still enjoyable.
Would Shaun of the Dead count. no too funny like Evil Dead 2. How about Perfume a story of a murderer. i know quite a few thought it was too strange but again i liked it for its strange nature. or The Host but thats more of a monster movie i suppose.
but if i was going to make a top ten list i would go for
1. Seven
2. 28 Days Later
3. John Carpenter's The Thing
4. The Exorcist
5. The Descent
6. Alien
7. The Changeling
8. The Devil's Backbone
9. The Birds
10. The Shining (or is it The Shinning)
i'm sure im forgetting a few that should be on the list.

Yea say no more
I already added The Void to my must see list
I am going to watch Night Of the Living Dead after I post this.
I live at the beach and the fog is rolling in around my house.
So I have my LG on popcorn in one hand and the wifey in the other.
But now I want to throw a few more titles that have yet to make anyones list
The Sixth Sense.... almost 10 years since this gem came out (can we say 10th anniversary Blu Ray edition??)
Frailty ..... we may never know whether it was insanity or divine manifestation
Misery ....can anyone still watch the log scene and not cringe?
Saw....... Modern Classic
Hostel..... Hot chicks as bait?? Who wouldn't have fallen prey to those killer?
Amityville Horror...... try getting an interest only loan on this house that happen to be the gates of hell
Pet Sematary .....Cringe worthy
Nosferatu....... Horror 1920's style
Child's Play.... Still holds up

I watched The Mist last night. Highly recommended.
You might also want to view Dust Devil, the Final Cut. This movie is riviting.

Hmmm... maybe I should look under that "special features" menu item later. The "default" ending I saw was the theatrical version though?

Skyhawk, I don't know which one is the theatrical one because I've seen both endings on cable (On Demad HD and Showtime HD). And I don't want to spoil it for you. But I do love the one that was on On Demand HD.

Concerning the other horror movie I recommended (page 3) - the Ausse indie WOLF CREEK... for hi-def it's been an HD-DVD exclusive here in North America [which I own], recently released (by Optimum) and now available on their 'region-free' Blu-ray disc (playable anywhere) from Great Britain - and can be ordered at Amazon's UK site
VIEW HERE

Some good stuff listed, mostly the
high profile films that have been seen multiple times, and as
many have mentioned, have lost their scare value.
Jaws and Halloween would be my #1 and #2 first view favorites.
Evil Dead has become laughable and the "Iconic" Night
of the Living Dead is now a major yawn. The only scary thing
about this film is the plethora of lousy copycats it has
spawned.
Some less well known films you might consider:
Dead Birds
Long Weekend
Population 436
Scarecrows
Storm Warning (Dimension Films)
Inside
Japanese:
Shutter
Ring
Cello
Dark Water
audition
Love or Hate:
Perfume
the Nameless
Silent Hill
They
the Cell
Feed
Older Films:
the Brood
Shock Waves
the Haunting (b/w)
the Witch's Mirror
Castle of Blood
Slasher/Gore:
Wrong Turn
the Burning
Happy Hell Night
Re-animator

Another onne of my favs, is a 1992 film starring Christine Lahti, sexy Jennifer Rubin, and Dylan McDermott - THE FEAR INSIDE - I own the LaserDisc (not available on DVD), which I believe first premiered on Showtime cable TV.
An agoraphobic children's book illustrator (Christine Lahti) is trapped inside her home by two young (and reckless) psychos-in-love (Dylan McDermott and Jennifer Rubin), who terrorize her. It is only when her young son (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is threatened that she manages to overcome her paralyzing fears and attempt to leave her home to save him...

From an Amazon comment (VHS edition) - A movie where your thoughts determine your direction in life. This is a must see movie. It speaks to those of us in society who have disassociated with the outside world. The lesson learned from this movie is that you turn your fears into a reality by concentrating on them.
