In response to Kuco's problem that I've also experienced myself (click on the link below to see his thread) it seems to be a problem with some receivers decoding hardware resulting in a loud pop and tripping the protection circuit. This could possibly damage your speakers. While searching through the AVS forum I found a link to a 605 firmware update for earlier models. I had to input my serial # and email address to receive an email to confirm wether I needed an update or not. Also I know a few of you guys just bought the 705 so I also did a search for a 705 page but with no success, but when you get a chance try to read some of the post they can help you if you take the time to read them (not all 1000+ of course). If you own the equipment than it's in your best interest to gather as much info as possible.

Yea Falcon, this is getting out of hand, now it will be a must to have ethernet ports on the back of receivers to get the latest firmware updates.

John, Your hook up is exactly what they are mentioning in the thread (the 705 and the Panasonic BD30). I know you own a 705 and the Panny 30, do you bitstream or PCM? I'm not going to ask you to try to see if any of this is confirmed on your system because of risk to your speakers but keep a look out for any potential occurrences and let us know.
Thanks,
Tony

Tony,
As I mentioned in Kuco's post, I played "Live Free or Die Hard" from my Panasonic BD30 (bitstream undecoded out) in DTS Master Audio to my Onkyo 705, and it played perfectly.

Did you guys get the popping issues fixed? Let me know as the Onkyo 605 may be the receiver I end up getting due to budget constraints.

In the several months I've had the Onkyo 705, I've played dozens and dozens of movies in SD, HD DVD, and Blu-ray, plus many hours of cable television broadcasts, mostly in high def. In all that time and experience, I've only encountered the "popping" sound on one Blu-ray disc (and I can't remember which one at this point).
I did discover one problem early on, though. If you have a 1080 signal going into the 705 (and presumably the 605 and 805, too) through the component jacks, the receiver will downconvert the signal to 720p going out of the HDMI jack to your TV set. My high-definition cable box transmits a 1080i signal but only uses component outputs, not HDMI. Therefore, I have to send the cable signal directly to the TV set in order to get a full 1080i resolution. However, any HDMI connections (like the HD DVD and BD players) to the Onkyo will output 1080 just fine through the Onkyo's HDMI cable to the TV.
So, if you are using the Onkyo as a switchbox for all of your components, and your high-def TV reception looks a little softer than usual, check it out. Could be the receiver.

I just received my new digital SLR camera (Canon EOS 40D) and the first thing I had to do was upgrade the firmware by downloading it from the Canon site and copying it to a compact flash card!
The good news is that no firmware updates have been released for my car so far this year. Last year they had two. Grrr.... they charge me almost $80 a pop for that service now that the vehicle is out of warranty.

Firmware updates say to me that maybe the product isnt ready yet. I can see these every now and then as being ok,and its certainly nice to have the option, but cmon. Buying a product that needs to be updated before you even plug it in! Maybe we need a "FDA" for the electronic industry.

After all of the negative reviews I have read on the 705 and 805 I will definitely stay away from Onkyo.
If the fizzes, pops, explosions and smoke are in the receiver and not in the movie...HELL no!

I've only experienced this 2x with the same movie and at the same part in the movie. It's not an overheating issue. I've also read that you can upate the 705 and 805 thru the Toshlink. Anyone hear the same?

Funny, I haven't read any "negative" reviews. All the publications that have covered the Onkyo line seem to love these receivers, as do the owners at the AVS Forums official owner's thread. With the one exception of the odd component in/HDMI out down-scaling, I've found it perfect. Smoke? The thing hardly even gets warm after hours of use.

This is what onkyo wrote back to me about the poping on the 705
Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.
You do have a club Onkyo profile so what you can do is register the receiver under your account. Once you do that then there is going to be a link that you would be able to download the DTS MA firmware so you are able to update the receiver. The link is also going to be providing you instructions plus the firmware for the unit.

I didn't make this stuff up.
Evidently, there's not enough space to display the whole link.
Do a search on the 805 on Amazon. Read the reviews. There are good and bad. There are plenty of bad ones to make me stay away.
Regarding the 705...
Looks to me like there's popping issues and lip sync issues. If you have not had any John, good for you. I however, won't gamble on Onkyo.

wolfen,
On the same Amazon page you linked to, 74 of 103 owners gave the Onkyo 805 five out of five stars. Only seven people gave it one star. I guess it's like cars. One in ten is going to be a lemon. You take it back and get another.
The editor has had his 805 since last year and loves it. So far, my 705 is working great. I had a Denon for almost ten years before that, and it was fine, too. I'd say they (Onkyos and Denons) are still the best choices right now.

Yes, Yamaha. Years ago, they were always rather more expensive and, I'm told, more fragile than other mid-fi brands, but that seems to have changed. I've heard good things about them at the AVS Forums over the past year or so.
There's an "official" thread for each of these brands and for each of their models over at AVS. You might want to check it all out and hear from people who are generally more knowledgeable than the average Amazon client: http://www.avsforum.com/
Just type in a search and look for the word "official" in the thread titles.

John,
As a Yamaha owner, I guess I have no reason to look beyond Yamaha. The fact that you have had good luck with Onkyo is fantastic. I guess my point is that I don't want to take the chance that I may get one of the lemons.
For me at least...if it ain't broken - don't fix it.

Everytime I'm doing research for a product I look at the lowest ratings first...that way I can analyze what the problems tend to be...and many of those 'negative' reviews have no relevance to the product...some say about price, other about availability, or others that they have a feature thaty didn't want, or that they lack something they wanted, but most of the time (99%) they have nothing constructive to say...and when they do, is mostly a defect from the item...have you ever noticed that?
Also, some of the positive reviews (about other products, not this one) say like "great, but..." "if only..." and they give it a 5, when it should've been less...people think that just because it's their favorite product they can omit some cons of the product...not fair for the rest of us who want unbiased comments (not opinions)...or unbiased reviews...

Obviously, if a person is going to make a rather large purchase and spend some serious coin, he or she should do ample research. Amazon is one source and as John pointed out, average. I find that CNET has been very helpful for me over the years as well as AVS Forum.

Do you also own the Yammie RX-V663? I'm really satisfied with my "cheap" receiver BTW. I wouldn't consider one of the cheaper Onkyo models compared to this. This receiver has like 10x more bang for the buck (IMO).

Just finished reading a review of the "INTEGRA DTC-9.8" in Home Theater mag.
Basicly the reviewer loved this processor,it does EVERYTHING,and it only costs $1,600 bucks.
He also went on to say...
"Honestly,at twice the price,I would call this a steal. At under $2000, I would just about call it a must-have."

Hello All,
My Onkyo 605 and Panny BD30 has been working great so far.
I've had them less then a year.
I've had a few movies that did " POP" and certain times.
I just watched Rambo and got the POP
I had it on the Orphanage and a few other BD titles.
It seems the newer titles are doing most of the POPing
It seems it's the DTS/Master thats doing the damage also
The movies play fine after the POP and nothing shuts down.
I've tried reading through the AVs forum which was linked on a post here.
But the site was very confusing for me.
It looks like a firmware/download/ very confusing for this HT fan.
Has any one contacted Onkyo ?
Can I buy a disc with the firmare ?
Do I need to plug in the computer like my HD-DVD player ??
Whew I need help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike,
I believe any Onkyo firmware updates at this point require that you send the unit back to Onkyo.
I, too, have an Onkyo and Panasonic combination, and I, too, have experienced the popping on maybe two or three occasions (but never tripping the receiver's protection circuits). This has been in playing back numerous discs, so it's hardly been an issue for me. It's certainly not one I would consider fretting over. In fact, the last time I heard a pop was several months ago, so I had almost completely forgetten about it until you just brought it up again.

John,
Thanks for the tip.
I'm not going to lose my Onkyo for possibly months .
The POP hasn't really effected or damaged anything.
It's just certain disc's.( DTS/Master ) ?????
It does give you a scare if your listening at high volume which can be a good thing in a horror movie.
I'm going to keep the unit because it does do a great job with everything thats thrown at it.
I wrote Onkyo via e-mail.
I keep you posted if this can be a quick fix in the future.
Mike
