Which connection produces the best picture -- S-Video or VGA?

I will be hooking it up to a 1080p projector, if that helps any.

EDIT: I've also decided to get a Sega Saturn. I don't know anything about it though, does anyone know what kind of A/V cables I can get for it?

Use the VGA. It will be comparable to using component and should provide you with crisper lines and brighter colors (even for a Dreamcast).

VGA or S-Video won't matter when you hook it up to an HD projector, it's gonna look terrible either way unless you are sitting a good 20-30 feet from the screen. You wouldn't notice a difference from either source even on an SD screen/projector.

I have an idea. Buy a XBOX 360 even though Microsoft is a corporate terrorist. The games are awesome. I'm addicted to it.

I love Dreamcast, its too bad I can't find the av cords. You know 360 is pretty similar to Dreamcast in that they both have hardware problems. 360 has a higher failure rate, but they both crap out. Both systems also contain some of the best games ever released.

I wonder why the Dreamcast craps out. It's got a much slower processor as far as heat goes. Does the optical drive go bad?

My Dreamcast was the only non-Nintendo console I've ever owned. I had to sell it with all the accessories I had for it because I needed money. The only accessory I kept for it (I don't know why) was a device and software that enabled my Dreamcast to play VCD's movies and MP3's from a CD (that's why I bought Star Wars and the Back to the Future trilogy on VCD from Hong Kong). It was so kewl back then since it was the only and I think the first console to be able to play movies using such accessory. Dreamcast was ahead of its time.

The only gripe I had is that the CD-drive was louder than robot in an assembly line. I hated playing sport games because they were so loud to read. Other than that, I regret selling it.

The Dreamcast was slapped together by Sega in a last ditch effort to stay relevent in the hardware arena. They knew full well that Sony's PS2 was on the way and that it was gonna be a monster. After the failure that was the Saturn, they had to beat the competitiors (Nintendo and Sony) to the market to maintain a reasonable share in the video game hardware industry. Well, Nintendo beat them by 3 whole years with the Nintendo 64. Sony was still 18 months out with the PS2 so you'd think the Dreamcast would have plenty of time to cement itself in the market and get a strong grip on fans. This was certainly not the case. The proprietary GD-ROM discs initially had some manufacturing defaults that pissed alot of people off by causing disc read errors. Also Sega made the mistake (in my opinion) of licensing to anyone and everyone who wanted to make a game with little or no quality control or basic set of standards for the developers to meet to put out a game on the system. There are literally hundreds of games for the Dreamcast that are so terrible most people wouldn't even take any interest in the game past the first few minutes of gameplay. There were a few truly unique ideas on the sytem though. There was the evolution game called Seventh Cross Evolution (which is where Will Wright stole the idea for Spore if you ask me!) There are a few other shining gems on the system as well. My personal favorites were Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike and Zombie Revenge.

Actually... I have already hooked-up my Dreamcast both ways to my 60" HDTV, and the VGA connection looks a LOT better than it does on the S-Video (composite looks even worse, and you don't want to know how bad a "coax" connection looks)!

I only tested it, just to see how it would look. It looks best on a CRT computer monitor, and since most people are practically giving-away CRT monitors... I would check http://www.craigslist.org/ in your local area, as people ALWAYS are giving away CRT monitors. I have seen people giving away VERY GOOD monitors, too! Many times I see monitors as big as 17" being given away EVERYDAY. Occasionally, I'll see a 19" or 20" monitor up for grabs. One time... I saw a 22" CRT - for free!!!

I have an extremely high-res 19" CRT monitor I use for my computing AND for my Sega Dreamcast. I hate LCD computer monitors (they only do ONE resolution decently, the rest suck).

Oh... and being the Dreamcast IS limited in resolution... throwing that up on a huge screen makes it looks worse! On a good VGA CRT... the output is nearly as good as the original XBOX (nearly, not AS good)! It DOES look better than the playstation one ever did, and it comes closer in quality to a PS2 (but that's because the PS2 isn't as good as the original XBOX)!!

Veteran-Viewer, I have a Compaq QVision 210 21" monitor that weighs about 100lbs!

I don't use it anymore, and figure I can't really sell this 1600 x 1200 monster monitor, so it gathers dust until I find someone I can give it away to locally (if they carry it out of the storage room). The sad part is that you don't even want to know what I paid for this pro graphics monitor new when it first came out. But it works as good today as it did way back when I bought it, and I got years upon years of use from it.

I currently have my Dreamcast hooked up with A/V cables.

I remember reading that Dreamcast itself was profitable, but tha SEGA had bled too much from losses from Saturn and the SEGA 32X. The 32X was a disaster because it alienated the vast genesis user base.

I for one love my Dreamcast and despite owning a PS2, and an Xbox 360 I continue to re-visit my Dreamcast from time to time.

The only console that I would play again would be the N64...there's something about Super Mario 64, greatest game of all time...but that's it. My PS1 is dusting really nice, but the PS2 is dusting even better ...I sold the genesis long ago (about seven years), but loved playing Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park (and another weird dude game)...even my brother got rid of his Gamecube a year ago...I only hoped to get another great game, Mario Kart for the Wii, so that I can finally buy the console and game...yay! lol...
