Here's what I sent Sony today. I encourage many of you to do the same...

RE: PS3 7.1 Audio Output

To Whom It May Concern:

I am contacting you in regards to the PS3 audio output. Many PS3 users are extremely delighted with the latest firmware update v2.3. The addition to decode DTS-HD to LPCM is a great benefit to Home Theater enthusiasts. Unfortunately firmware v2.3 does not address 7.1 audio output of some Blu-ray titles. I am requesting that your engineers look into a firmware update that allows full 7.1 audio output for the PS3 for all Blu-ray titles. In addition, the firmware should allow for all suites of DTS and Dolby to output at 7.1.

Once again, I appreciate Sony’s prompt attention to previous requests. The PS3 is a great gaming machine and in my opinion the best Blu-ray player to date because of its’ ability to download firmware updates. Sony has been responsive to consumer concerns in the past and I hope that full support of 7.1 audio output for both Dolby and DTS suites are included in the next firmware update. Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter. My contact information is below if you need to contact me. Thank you.

Sincerely,

so, someone posted on avs as well and said that many ps3ers with 7.1 receivers found a work around. you can force the 7.1 playback by unchecking the 5.1 lpcm playback. sounds kinda tedious to have to go back and forth like that but if it works than i could do that until hopefully soon a firmware fix comes around. Will try this tonight. anybody else know of this?

I've tried that work around with no success. I'm not sure if its' the titles I have or not. Nevertheless, express your concern to Sony and I'm sure we will get a firmware update to resolve the issue. Let me know which title you use for the workaround. Thanks!

Don't worry, SONY and dts are hard at work to release update v2.4 in the next couple of months to correct this issue, but from what I've read the new ONKYOs have no problem playing the dts HD/MA to LPCM 7.1 from the PS3? Maybe I'm mistaken.

Thanks Tony. It's good to know that the issue is being addressed. I have a Denon 4306 receiver so I guess this issue will be addressed with firmware v2.4. Please keep us posted as things develop.

Thanks Wolfen and thanks to all my DVDTown friends that showed so much support during my time of greif. Video Cipher helped big time since he went through this a couple of times himself. SONY actually has a good turn around time for replacing your PS3. I've heard horror stories of 2-3 months, but only 2 weeks now that's great. The best thing was that SONY sent me an email yesterday that my unit was ready to be shipped and by 10 o'clock this morning I was watching Ratatouille.

k, so i tired the work around again yesterday and no luck for me either. tried shoot 'em up and rush hour 3. My receiver shows a 7.1 playback but the rear speakers never even made a peep. I'm using the onkyo 705 so i don't think the onkyos are the only ones unaffected. oh well. but good to know they are working on it!
