FYI...

I was on Xploitedcinema's website tonight looking at the NEW release section, and they have added several new all-region HD-DVD/Blu-ray titles (The Motorcycle Diaries and Sexy Beast on HD-DVD, Children of Men on Blu-ray etc), and now one of my favorite films, the amazing TOUCHING THE VOID...

Xploited wants $39 + shipping... however Amazon's UK website has it for roughly $23 + shipping (after dollar-to-pound conversion) - VIEW HERE

I'm also wondering if perhaps a Blu-ray edition will be forthcoming over the next few months, now that it's the main hi-def disc format for support and sales. And since (I believe) that MGM still owns the North American rights, the film might not get a Blu-ray release here for a long time (considering how slow MGM is in bringing out their content in hi-def). Their standard Region 1 DVD (which I own) is very good (including the bonus features ported over to the new HD-DVD), but I doubt the hi-def version is newly remastered, and is probably from the same master used for the DVD. Still, I'll be buying this one for sure soon (either on HD-DVD from Amazon UK), or perhaps a possible Blu-ray release (going to wait for awhile and see).

I'm always amazed watching this film, not only the subject matter, but also the difficulties involved in the re-creation of the 'movie' with the crew, actors, etc.

- "As the old saw goes, I've seen a few films and no mistake......but I've never seen anything like Touching the Void before."

> TOUCHING THE VOID is a 2003 documentary film based on the book of the same name by Joe Simpson about Simpson's and Simon Yates' disastrous and near fatal attempt to climb the 6,344 metre (20,813 foot) Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. The film combines documentary footage of interviews conducted with Simpson, Yates and Richard Hawking with a reenactment performed by actors Brendan Mackey, Nicholas Aaron and Ollie Ryall. The film was directed by Kevin MacDonald (who recently directed The Last King of Scotland).

The only thing to say about this movie is WATCH IT! Even the toughest critic will be left speechless after watching this movie! You watch this movie knowing that those events really happened!

It really is one of the best movies of the new millennium. I'm a sucker for mountain climbing movies, but this one succeeds on every level. It's a truly great documentary, and even provides the rare (positive) sighting of an atheist/skeptic in a movie.
