I could have purchased the PS3 last month, but I didn't because there simply isn't any games that make me feel like I absolutely have to have it! I love playing console games, and the PS3 lacks in the WOW factor for games - way too many been there-done that games. Then again, I also decided not to support a company that has easily shown greedy business practices -- not that other companies don't do the same, but it's like Nixon in Watergate, they got exposed and I'm just not going to support them when they have clearly been caught for being a bunch of greedy bastards. There are plenty of manufactures out there making Brooo-ray players and a few of them rated very well, and yes, you CAN beat SONY by not joining them.

I'd have to say I'm with Hoody on this one, however, I don't need a bunch of technical facts or fiction to base my choice. I simply will not support SONY for their cut-throat business practices, pretty much the same reason I don't support Blockbuster. Again, I realize most companies have their dirty tricks to sell their product, but when they get caught for it I feel as a consumer I owe it to myself to make a stand simply because of ethics and morals. I'm very happy with my LG BH200 and it performs the tasks that I need to . . . well, make me happy and pleased with my product. Plus the added feeling knowing I didn't buy SONY makes me feel even better. And please don't give me the "you bought a Brooo-ray player and that supports SONY crap!" Remember, it's a BH200 and plays HD DVD, as well.

So, for me, it's not a matter so much for technical aspects as it is for fair busniess practice. I was going the spend and extra $100 for the Panasonic Brooo-ray but lucked out in finding the $800 LG for half-price. And I couldn't be happier!

Tim I'm going to buy a machine next week sometime and so far I'm leaning towards the LG BH200, same as you have. I was leaning towards the PS3 for a while because of some games coming out but I like having ONE machine that plays BOTH formats. That's a big bonus for me and a great convenience. We'll see, I may change my mind again by Tuesday/Wednesday but the reviews on the LG 200 have made me lean towards it, even though I think it's ugly as hell but oh well...I'm buying it for practicality. Oh ya it's on sale for $399 ($100 off) which also helps.

Now whether to get the Yamaha 6160 or 6180.

Falcon, I think Future Shop and Best Buy Canada still have amazing deals on the LG BH-200 and the Samsung BD-UP5000...should be in the $399 range...but you can talk them down

Ugly as hell! LMAO!!! I guess I never thought of it as ugly, as most the players kind of look alike to me. I guess if you mean ugly because it's big and bulky like old DVD players from the late 90's, well, you got me there! I'll admit, though, I do like the little blue-halo lit buttons -- kind of cute, actually. lol

The price sure has dropped on the BH200 over the last month, of course I really have no clue how long it's been on the market. When I purchased mine at BB about a month ago it was listed for $799, but I lucked out and found an open box one for $399. It still came with the warranty, plus the option to get the manufactures extended, so I really had nothing to lose. When I went to buy it I was intending to get the Panasonic Brooo-ray, but when I saw an $800 item for half the price the jackpot lights went on in my head! I actually called John while I was in the store and had him look up reviews on the BH200 for me. Of course, John was more than tickled to help me spend my money. lol

If anything, the big sale for me was that it played HD's, as well. I've heard all the Towners here battle over which was better during the past year, and by getting the BH200, it gave me a chance to see for myself. I realize Blu is where the format is going, and I don't buy as many HD discs but it's nice to know I can. Plus, the upconverting looks very good on the machine. I was watching Raiders of the Lost Ark (prep for new Indiana Jones movie) and it certainly looked like a better picture than I had with my old TV and DVD player. I'm very pleased all around with the player so far and I really can't say anything bad about it -- at least, I haven't found anything to make me unhappy about it.

Like the others I'd like to commend Tim on his excellent (first) choices since becoming an HD adopter recently...

HDTV purchase - a 1080p Panasonic Plasma

Hi-def player purchase - LG Combo player (both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats, also DVD upconversion)

^Both of these products are well-recommended, quality made, and should provide much enjoyment over many years. I'm hoping my endorsement of plasma tech helped convince you Tim (a little) in deciding on a great plasma TV (at a great price). (as we need DVDTOWN's best asset to have great HD equipment now, right!)

(plasma TVs do operate a little hotter then LCD TVs, obviously, but that's normal, and are made to last a long time, compared to plasmas from about 8-10 years ago).

Plus I've had enough money left over for:

Yes, them there plasmas are much better than they were a few years ago. They wen't from "ok" picture to best picture on the lot. Plus the life span being 8-years in hours (mind you, that's if you turn the set on and never turn it off, it will last up to 8-years, at least that's what the rednecks tell me). I'm so excited it almost peed my pants!

Even better for you! You didn't have to pay Sony that much. Only about $50 or $60 for the Blu-Ray licence...

Yes, but from what others have mentioned, that $50 is shared between other orgs. in the Brooo-ray camp, so it doesn't ALL go to SONY. Kind of like I can't esacpe giving money to SONY when it's a movie backed with their money, SONY pictures! But as long as I'm not buying their electronic gadgets and toys, that will have to do.

I am SOOOO glad now that players are coming down in price, so that we don't have to hear any more about how the PS3 is the greatest thing since the invention of the wheel. I have no interest in a gaming system as my DVD player, especially when you can't really use it as a gaming system, since there are so few games worth playing.

I picked up my BH200 today ($345 at Future Shop - it was an open box item, but so what?). I'm watching Twister now, and I absolutely love it. I plugged it in, and it is playing flawlessly. I can't even say that about my A30, which had some issues with the audio and video synching, though it was mostly fixed with the firmware update. If you live in Canada, and you want to buy Blu (especially if you already own HD DVD), RUN to Future Shop and pick up the LG before they're out at $399. I can't find anyone saying anything negative about this player (ugly? seriously?), but the Samsung, which is the same price, seems to be buggy as hell. Anyway, back to those killer tornadoes!
