Tony1569, your comment is downright NONSENSE.

One: Where did I ever provide, in any of my messages, about anything "apple TV", or "HTPC"?
Two: Apple TV costs under $300 that DOESN'T REQUIRE HDTV set... Blu-ray NEEDS one.
Three: You must be living UNDER A ROCK if you're suggesting that HTPC costs $1000!!! That is DOWNRIGHT FALSE! One can easily... EASILY get a FULL Dell 531 desktop for under $350, at dell outlet with FULL ONE YEAR PARTS & LABOR included. Should anyone jump the Blu-ray bandwagon, you can Upgrade that same system with a ATI RADEON 2600PRO HD or 2600XT (ATI being FAR SUPERIOR in processing HD-VIDEO than Nvidia) for around $65-$80, and a blu-ray reader for $130- and you have yourself a FULL BLOWN BLU-RAY PLAYER, that anyone can also use- AS A FULL BLOWN COMPUTER.

That dell 531 desktop is equipped with a AMD x2 4400 cpu (minimum) w/ 2gb ram, and a generous sized 500GB SATA drive, and a 5.1 audio channel soundcard. Since the MAJORITY of the Hidef processing is offloaded to the ati radeon videocard, a SUPERFAST CPU IS NOT NEEDED. That same desktop pc has one of the QUIETEST POWER SUPPLY'S EVER PROVIDED (check the forums). That same desktop ALSO ALREADY INCLUDES A SATA DVD BURNER, AND A WINDOWS VISTA OS. 2gb ram is all you need since the 256mb or 512mb videocard memory, services the hi-def/graphics content.

Both the video card (with dvi-hdmi adapter) & the blu-player can be bought cheap at newegg, and using a FAR MORE FLEXIBLE video player (than Windows Media Player) that IS FREE: VLC Media player.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that you can get a $600 HTPC that can DO MORE video formats than a blu ray player, DO MORE functionality AS A COMPUTER for the user, & DO MORE potential HARDWARE upgrades, than buying a blu-ray PAPERWEIGHT. Here's another stinker: Unless you buy the PS3, THE HTPC (with the above setup) can play GAMES (made today) at decent framerates... Also: PC games ARE MUCH MUCH CHEAPER than console games (of the same titles- Example: Devil May Cry 4 is $20 cheaper for the PC format, check Amazon).

Last but not least: Dell ALWAYS provide coupon-code discounts on their delloutlet products during the holidays (especially Thanksgiving) that further sweeten the deal. From 15-30 percent OFF.

So I don't understand where you're pulling that $1000 figure... unless of course, YOU'RE JUST GUESSING. I don't even understand which IMAGINARY FRIEND suggested to you, that I mentioned anything about "Apple TV" or "HTPC" until you brought them up.

More importantly, my initial post was Sony's reason for supporting digital downloads... and that's because EVEN SONY- CANNOT PREDICT THE FUTURE FOR BLU RAY.

Maybe Sony realized, at the economic state the world is in now.... NO ONE CARES, NOR CAN AFFORD BLU-RAY- SO JOIN THE CLUB & PROVIDE DIGITAL DOWNLOADS, AS WELL.

Oh by the way... that PILOT-RUN by WB (that you're advertising) for releasing a blu-ray movie before a DVD... yeah, THAT BLOCKBUSTER TITLE will bring people in MASS EXODUS.

TD, weren't you talking about HD downloads? If you're saying that SD downloads may kill off Blu-ray or other HD media, then I don't understand why that would happen. They're aimed at completely different consumers. But if you were talking about HD downloads, then yes you do need some higher end equipment in order to enjoy HD in one form or another, in which case you aren't likely to be blown away by the cost of a $300-$400 Blu-ray player. Some may wait for the right price point for them, but I don't expect HD downloads to be significantly cheaper (if at all).

Yeah mal that was my point exactly. Sony is doing this to be able to compete with msoft just in case the momentum shifts to downloads. However.. if sony goes ahead and dominates digital distribution, which is very possible with mandatory wireless ps3's, interchangeable hard drives, and online store within one cheap bundle, then the next step would be to slow down adoption as much as possible while maintaining lead ground in order to crush the competition msoft. I'm sure destabilizing ms' budget is going to give ps3 or future consoles a good boost, as well as sway a lot of film buffs to try out the new trend of "cinematic gaming".
That is a little more info than i originally put, but I believe Sony and MS are tied up in each other in a lot of things right now. Each victory only compounds losses across the board for the rival.
I also get a little pissed off when i see that there "aren't any games" or when people refer to future releases as "going to suck". It's a lame argument.
As for that christmas card...... Lemme say one thing first. I've had xbox's and so have my friends. I have hated the controller from the start, hated the "american feel" xbox has, with the square jawed, goatee wearing, pretty boys, and hated the fact i can never read the writing on the screen.
When I saw that card, and saw Banjo, KI i wanted to kill someone. I was very upset first of all that not only did i believe the "new rare" was going to destroy several perfectly made games that i enjoyed so much when i was younger. But that 360 was going to cash in on the rare name, when not only did some of their best devs leave, but also the geniuses, (stamper bros.) are no longer involved whatsoever.
btw: if you've heard anything of either of them lemme know. I heard they were dot coming for a while but they've dropped off the face of the planet.
