You're making a lot of assumptions about groups of people, based on hear say and speculation.
Which assumptions, "hear say", and speculation? How about you be more specific and tell me why I'm wrong?

...But I do know that cars for white Americans in particular are a cultural necessity...
Assumption: Where's your proof that this is the reason that ANY male, let alone a "white" males need a car within their culture?
Quote:
...probably stemming from history when survival was dependent on owning a horse to get you around to your next source of water in the old west...
Speculation: The mere usage of the word "probably", is also assuming, and sounds more like an urban legend, than any factual proof or reference.
Quote:
I heard that the penalty for stealing a horse was hanging. I suppose the same historical attitude influences many Americans towards the necessity of having a loaded gun nearby in their home for "protection".
Hear say: Again, the usage of the words "I heard" and "I suppose", makes it hear say, but, further, the content of this sentence does not come across as factual, nor have you provided links or proof of any of your conjecture. It comes across as angry anti-American rhetoric, that's more tabloid based than factual.
So, again, I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

Nachtkriechen, don't you watch westerns?
In some states, the hanging penalty for horse theft is still in the books. Florida for one. Google it!
In the two US cities where I've lived, the buses that were provided in town were well utilized - but I've never seen a white person riding in one. Not one.
And yes, car ownership and driving are deeply rooted in the psych of American society - so much so that no country on earth has its communities and connecting infrastructure built around them to such an extent. No other country spends so much to support the automobile lifestyle and spends so little (in ratio comparison) in public transport. Any 101 sociological text has at least an introduction to this interesting phenomenon.

I agree with you Tim, however this whole GREEN thing is a joke. I heard on the news last week, that these GREEN people were bitching about the Olympic torch releasing 60 million somethings into the atmosphere. Now that is just crossing way over the line. Bottom line, over time, the Earth will heal itself. The problem, we make an attempt to help the Earth heal itself and thats when everything goes BONKERS.
Let the process work and if that process aint broke then no need to try and fix it!!!

Yeah IB... I saw a report on CNN Friday about a guy (in New Mexico I think) who found out he could lower is energy use/bill by about 25%, by installing a simple outside windmill (not the huge size kind, but one up to about 25 feet high).
But he can't use it yet - WHY? Turns out the local 'red tape' requires a $950 permit fee(!), plus a formal submission request to the city council, which takes at least 90 days to decide whether or not to approve the request! And what galls this individual is that you MUST pay the $950 fee regardless of whether the request is granted or not... graft!
With this kind of 'red tape', it's no wonder that many people don't care about 'going green' or trust their local/city/federal government in the 'business' of green (taxes, permits etc). Note: Al Gore has now made a small fortune with his foray into environment issues. The man knows where the money is these days when it comes to 'green' (hehe).

Hey Hawk I think it was FOX on line but I am not sure. Just google Olympic Torch Atmosphere, and something should pop up on the story.

I Disagree! If everyone makes a contribution to recycling, driving less, avoiding larger engines in vehicles, and turning off lights and electronics that don't need to be on, we all will benefit from it in the future! Last week, I have officially ordered the Solar powered system for my summer cottage! It will roughly cost me just over 22,000 for a full home. That includes enough power to power the house, a full sized shop, front and back yard lights, a quanset hut, and heating my water. I went with a 24v string set up, and a diesel generator! I have eight 24X64" panels!!! I can't wait to start working on the power house!!! I should turn enough energy that I could sell back to the power company!!!
