OMG Tim!! I'm speechless.... not!
Kidding aside, I am so proud of you Tim for choosing plasma, and you will see many, many years of satisfaction with that Panasonic plasma! Maybe that 'unique' YouTube commercial help seal the deal? <just kidding again.
Again, it thrills me to see you buy the best - PLASMA. I've own both LCD and plasma, will keep buying plasma until they stop making them! Remember, the first 100-150 hours of 'break-in', to keep your brightness and contrast at a lower (reduced) level. And enjoy!

Ya good point Hendrix. Tim do NOT have any still images or news tickers, etc for the first 100 hours at least as it can cause burn-in. After that you'll be fine.
Tim I just saw an HD A3 on craigslist for $90 in Toronto and it comes with 300 and Bourne Identity HD DVD's. Check craigslist or other sites in your area.

I'll have to see, I have 30-days on it, so if i don't like it i can bring it back for something else. The tech was telling me it's a new model and the only one that actually guarantees 1080p upconvert. Well, we'll see.

Wow Tim, when you decide to plunge into something, you don't hold back!
Now you really get to see how crappy standard DVD is ("upconverted" or not). Actually, I'm sure that TV is probably as good as upconverting a 480i signal as most upconverting DVD players are anyway. You should get a Blu-ray player (beg, borrow, steal, or buy) just to do a comparison then decide which player to bring back.

Dang! It's about time. We'll drag you kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century yet!
The 50" is good for you. But as others have said, now you need the high-def content to enjoy. A BD player, certainly. An HD DVD player because they're so cheap right now and they upconvert as well as anything. And HD cable or satellite service.
Congrats!
John

No offense there John, but why would you recommend anyone just getting into high-def to get a HD DVD player, considering that HD DVD lost the format war? I must be missing something.
Now if it was confirmed that Tim had to have a couple titles on HD DVD not released on Blu-ray and couldn't wait for them to be released on the winning format... then yes, I'd agree. Spend the $200 or whatever to watch (over and over) the few movies he couldn't wait for. As for upconversion, even his TV alone can probably match the Toshiba A-3x series (but not the XA2). And depending on the Blu-ray plater selected over the next few months, that might do just as good a job.

Skyhawk,
John just means well, and I probably would have purchased an HD DVD player ONLY for the upconverting alone, however, they just didn't have one in stock. So, I went with a different upconvert player for now and will probably get the Blu player very soon (waiting for that extra IRS check). Perhaps you're right and that set I got does do a lot more than I realize. out of all the sets I looked at on the lot, it had the most mind blowing, WOW factor when it came to PQ. I did have the tech setup the upconvert player I bought to the set just to see some example. It looked pretty damn good IMO, but I do notice Blu is certainly better, but what I did see out of the upconvert player was really nothing to complain about.
Nevertheless, I'm excited! Ok, now everybody just get along!

Sky,
As Tim points out, when you can get an HD DVD player for under $100 these days, you'd want to use it as an up-converting player for regular DVDs. Plus, there are hundreds of HD DVDs that are really cheap right now, many of them not (yet) available on Blu-ray. The question then is, Why wouldn't you buy an HD DVD player right now? --Unless you were still a confirmed Blu-ray fan and can't stand the idea of anybody buying anything HD DVD, even now. Kinda like those Japanese soldiers after WWII ended who were found on isolated islands still fighting the war.

Skyhawk even though you claim to have an HD DVD player (and HD DVD movies) you do seem to come of as anti HD DVD almost all the time. That's just the way I see it.
Anyway, Tim, once you got everything hooked up and you've setup the TV how you like it, let us know what you think. Borrow someones HD DVD or bluray player and let us know what you think of hidef also
Just remember no still images or sports/news tickers on the screen for the first 100 hours!

Yes, Yes the wisdom of Skyhawk. I have questioned it many times. For some that owns both format, he does get rather Blu in the face. At least Love explains and supports both. Skyhawk just manages to rant on about the PooS3, and how life in Blu land is so great, compared to HD DVD. If he truly does have a collection of 90, why does he tread against the format so much?
Is it a general lack of disrespect for us that chose HD DVD? Is it he truly is a Blu Fan-Boy and would never admit it? Or did he buy a A2 and return it/E-Bay it and pawn off the Movies like that other Blu Boy, that claimed he bought into HD DVD?
SkyHawk Inquiring Minds want to know the truth, the whole truth, so nothing but the truth, so help us god!
Yes, we can handle the truth....

as he has demonstrated in various threads, skyhawk is just a rude chode.
i think 90% of this site's visitors would agree that john is one of the nicest and calmest guys around, but skyhawk has managed to attack (and piss off) john repeatedly.
why would john and i NOT recommend an hd dvd player to tim? they're all being sold at very low prices, often cheaper than upconverting sd dvds players. therefore, tim can get an a2 or a3 at wal-mart for $75 instead of a samsung upconverter for $100. plus, some combo discs are actually cheaper than their sd-dvd-only counterparts (example: "bourne 3", "the kingdom", "elizabeth: the golden age", "michael clayton", etc.), so if tim wanted to buy some movies that happen to be combo discs, then he'd be saving money going that route.
skyhawk, if you're going to argue for the sake of arguing, then take your truck elsewhere. we are trying to help tim ease into the high-def world, and you're just being a jerk.

Just to add my opinion, I have an XBOX 360 w/HD DVD addon AND a Toshiba A3, and they both upconvert waaaaay better than the 40GB PS3 I own.
EDIT: I'm using VGA cables with the XBOX 360 addon.

well, as i said, i would have picked an HD DVD player up if one were in stock. I still might get one if I happen to see one for sale anywhere. Sure, it would be nice to pick up some cheap HD DVDs then, but what worries me is if manufatures would stop making players in the future to stop supporting it (combo players for example). So then, say my HD DVD player goes out, nobody's making anything to support them, then I have a whole library of HD DVDs I can't play. Therefore, I'm only interested in a player that upconverts.
I does get to me, though, when we have issues between each other when we are such a small group of gents that should just get along. Granted, nothing wrong with constructive, heated debate, but it gets silly when we result to insults and less maturity. I know what you're thinking, the pot is calling the kettle black! And you're right -- I'm just as guilty in bickering back and forth and acting like an ass, and I admit I'm wrong for it. However, many of us here have done the same. Perhaps it's just human nature to stir the pot with others, but the long road to wisdom is filled with many mistakes, and the key to gaining wisdom is having the power to admit them.
Life it too short guys, learn to get along guys.

Tim if you score an HD DVD player for $75 it's worth it for the DVD upconverting alone. Then if you score some HD DVD's for $10-$15 that's a bonus just to get a taste of hidef but you don't have to build up a huge library. Just get a couple until you get a bluray player or whatever and don't worry if the HD DVD player dies, you will be able to get one on amazon, craigslist, ebay, etc for YEARS to come.
Next you're going to wanna get a new receiver to enjoy Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD.

tim,
at wal-mart, you can get an hd-a2 or an hd-a3 for $75.
at amazon.com, hd dvd/dvd combo discs are now cheaper than or almost the same price as their sd-dvd-only counterparts. for example, "michael clayton" is $16.99 on sd dvd, $18.99 on hd dvd, and $23.95 on blu-ray. you can watch the hd dvd for many years to come, but if your hd dvd player dies, then you can still watch the sd dvd side.
there is no fear as long as you stick with buying combo discs.

Eddie,
Oooh! "The Kingdom", 3/4 was filmmed 10-miles from my house! It cracked me up when I watched it as I noticed most of it was filmmed around Williams Field Airpark -- Plus they built this elaborate set there(the part in the movie where the explosion happens and creates a big hole in the ground -- yeah, that was the movie set I drove by for several months).
Well, I have a Super Wal*mart 3-miles from me. I'll go up there in a few and see if they have any in stock.

And as I said, unless Tim wants some HD DVD titles he cannot wait for on Blu-ray, I wouldn't spend even $20 on a player to needlessly take up another HDMI port for nothing. He's an HD newcomer, and a year ago I would have advised him to go both Blu-ray and HD DVD to get the best choices in new releases. It was kind of a no-brainer. But now HD DVD is an obsolete format. Everything released from here on is on Blu-ray, like it or not. And as I know you're a true HD DVD fanboy, I know you hate it. But too freakin' bad for you fanatics.

To buy an HD DVD player just for the sake of getting HD movies cheap is not a good idea. HD is like an investment. You don't spend money on something that the industry has already turned it's back on. Tim has already stated that he has a new upconverting player so that would elimimate any need to buy on HD DVD player for upconversion. Like Sykhwk said and I agree 100%, HDMI inputs are at a premium on electronics. If you run out of inputs something has to get bumped.
I only have 2 HDMI inputs on both my HDTV and my ONKYO receiver. Being as though I only have 2 HDMI sources (PS3 and cable) they are both occupied. If push came to shove since cable has a max resolution of 1080i, I could use component straight to the TV. I think Blu ray is a much better choice. HD DVD is gone and soon it will be harder and more expensive to get those hard to find players to back up the one you have and movies to watch them on.

I picked up a HDMI switcher from "Slavemart" for like 60 bucks. And it works flawlessly. Here let me give you that info, hold on, gotta dig the box out of the basement.
Alright here we go. Keep in mind that I was very sceptical of this product. It WORKS!
JOYTECH HDMI TRILINK SWITCHER
1080P COMPATIBLE
HDCP COMPLIANT
ZERO SIGNAL LOSS
ADDS 3 MORE HDMI INPUTS!!!

fellas,
i suggested that tim buy combo discs if he bought any hd dvd titles, so it's not as if i'm telling him to screw himself in the ass.
i've known tim for a long time now (at least seven years), so i know how he feels about having to fuss with technology on a constant basis. he absolutely hates the idea of firmware updates, and with the way that things are now with blu-ray (profiles 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, etc.), there is a good chance that he will literally pick up a blu-ray player and throw it out of a window if he were to buy one. i'm saving my friend from doing $300-$800 worth of damage to himself. meanwhile, you guys are just shooting from your fingers without any emotional investment in a friendship with tim. it's easy to type the type, but let's see you walk the walk as tim's friend, not just a blu-ray chode.

Oh, so you can get a switcher box! I have 3 HDMI inputs on my TV, but I can see how they would get used up with several components.

Eddie... it disappoints me that you consider those that love Blu-ray a 'chode', but of course you feel the opposite is true for an HD-DVD "only" supporter like yourself!
If you have a problem with Blu-ray players and supporters that have a 1.0 player, and feel they are shortchanged because of 1.1 and 2.0 improvements, just keep it to yourself without insults. I'm certainly not bitter against the DVD format, when the first 2 players I purchased had only S-Video and composite outputs (480i max), while today we have models with Component and HDMI (upconversion to 1080p). Tech is always improving over time.
As for Tim, since he's been patient, I would advise him to wait a few months longer, until the summer 2.0 players are forthcoming (or even the fall to winter period for the inevitable price drops). Sony has two major, and affordable Blu-ray players arriving this summer - one model will have 2.0 built-in, the other (cheaper) will be able to add it as a firmware update over the rest of the year. Also, more players are coming from others, such as Panasonic (one of the best yet!), Samsung, Funai, etc.
Everyone... as for the issue of "running out of HDMI inputs", as long as your HDTV has just one single digital input (HDCP capable) - whether DVI or HDMI - you can have a multitude of other components digitally 'plugged' into the set by using an HDMI switcher box, value priced from a basic model, to some that have elaborate features, and many inputs. Some of the best 'value-priced' models are thru MONOPRICE.com.
Also, consider the OCTAVA brand.

loverboy,
there are several people who own blu-ray machines--including john, ranjan, jason, etc.--whom i have never called blu-ray chodes. however, there are many people who own both hd-dvd and blu-ray players whom i have called blu-ray chodes. it has nothing to do with whether or not one supports blu-ray but everything to do with HOW one supports blu-ray.

Well, then Eddie's an HD-DVD "chode", especially for "HOW" he supports the format, yet bashes all things Blu-ray, and those non-DVDTOWN staff members here on the Msg Bd that have praised it. How convenient. Too bad some of us who appreciate Blu-ray Hi-Def just don't happen to have been a DVDTOWN staff member at one time (like the 3 he cited).

HD-DVD Chode Eddie speaks of "immature comments".
Here's one he just made today (enjoy) -
"i'm saving my friend from doing $300-$800 worth of damage to himself. meanwhile, you guys are just shooting from your fingers without any emotional investment in a friendship with tim. it's easy to type the type, but let's see you walk the walk as tim's friend, not just a blu-ray chode."
LOL - yeah, you've got the 'emotional' part down just fine.
Yet even Tim isn't interested (at this point) in suffering financial 'damage' by buying an HD-DVD player (as some suggested) and/or HD-DVD discs. But yet you Eddie, when others recommend he purchase a BD player, you continue your BITTER ATTACKS against Blu-ray... and label those who oppose your dribble as 'immature'. Uh huh.. yeah, right.
And politics yet again! ...very immature for you on a website WHERE MOVIES MATTER... you 'chode'.

loverboy,
you must've forgotten all of tim's rants against firmware updates during the past six months. even the best blu-ray player, the ps3, requires continuous updates in order to handle various minor software additions or hiccups. therefore, knowing tim's temperament, i'm advising against his buying something that will anger him, not provide him with the kind of enjoyment that he'd like to get from his new tv. my advice is person-specific to tim.
besides, tim didn't write that he had completely ruled out getting an hd-dvd player. in the first two pages of this thread, tim told everyone that he asked about getting an hd-dvd player at the store (not necessarily to play hd dvds but to use as an upconverter).
once again, loverboy, you have a problem distinguishing facts from fictions. you sound like those chodes who keep telling americans that the troop surge "works".

Hey guys, all fighting aside, I did go up to Wal*mart today and NO HD DVD players, they had one Brooo-ray for $388 but none in stock, and NO PS3s available. It seems so odd to me because 99% of the people I see in Wal*mart don't look like they could afford to rub two dimes together. They look like the kind of people you see at the DMV.
Ok, I realize you guys are all excited to get me into the hi-def dics, and I too ma excited to get there -- especially after what I've seen on all the HD channels on my brand spankin' new HDTV! However, you guys do know I'm the kind of guy that will wait it out for the right time. It's obvious I will have to go Blu (no choice) and Eddie is right, I hate the damn profile update BS! Hell, I hate how Windows Vista wants to update every single time I boot my computer up! Nevertheless, it's an issues I'm going to have to get used to, obviously.
As I said early on, I would have purchased the HD DVD player had they had one in stock, and only for upconverting purposes. However, the tech guy that sold me the Samsung upconverter explained in detail the feautres and issues with each upconvert player available. Apparently, many players will claim upconvert to 1080p but don't actually deliver the goods. The player he sold me he assured me it is guaranteed to upconvert to 1080p on every single SD DVD you put in it. I'm inclined to believe it because I watched the poorly acted "Star Wars III" today and it looked amazing!
The thing you need to understand with Eddie, Jimi Love, is he feels a passion to not support a product that has won by underhanded business practices. And personally, I don't blame him. Eddie and I are the type of people that don't like to support greedy empires (Blockbuster comes ot mind, love). We all may have differences in our choices, but we should all respect each other for them. I can tell you, when the time comes that I get a Brooo-ray, it won't be made by Sony!

Tim,
Just to clarify: I didn't suggest your buying only an HD DVD player. I suggested that you buy a Blu-ray player, because that's where everything high def on disc is headed, but that you ALSO buy an HD DVD player because (1) they're cheap right now (under $100), (2) because they upscale so well (you can use it for that purpose alone), and (3) because there are many movies only available (right now) in high def on HD DVD, and the discs are super-cheap at the moment.
As far as worrying about the HD DVD player dying some day and your not being able to replace it, remember that you can still get laser-disc players cheap, a decade after their demise. There is no reason to suppose you wouldn't be able to buy an HD DVD player (used, refurbished, whatever) a decade from now.
John

To shop at Walmart is to support the "evil empire." (just write that down 1000 times and it will sink in)...
Bad decision also on you ruling out the PS3. Infact it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy any Blu-ray player without directly putting something into Sony's pocket. Even if you buy Panasonic or ANYTHING else, Sony is still GOD OF BLU-RAY.

Plus as John was saying HD DVD movies are super cheap right now. As in you can get a bunch of them for $11.95 and $13.95 which is nuts. Some of these movies won't make it on bluray for at least another year and you can bet the farm they will probably cost $25 when they come out on that format.
So why not buy an HD DVD player for like $75-$100, buy some cheap hidef movies now with 1080P/24 transfers and hidef audio to enjoy the brand spankin' new 50" plasma he just purchased. Plus it probably upconverts DVD's better than the Samsung he got anyway.
Now, IF he gets an HD DVD player it doesn't mean he won't get a bluray player down the road when he's ready to. He's just getting into hidef now for cheaper which is not a bad idea when you're trying to S-T-R-E-T-C-H your dollars.

too many nice comments for tim. hey Tim i hate you for having such a nice tv.
also, he is a big boy. as he stated, waited all this time, is up to him wether he wants to get a cheap ass hddvd player if found just to check it out. I for one, knowing all the facts and at this stage of the game, would buy it any how, with some extra money or whatever, just to check it out fully for myself, even if not buying hddvds, just add a few via blockbuster online to enjoy while i wait some more, and continue to upconvert with it. i dont like ps3 upconversion that much.

Yeah it seems that the PS3's DVD upconversion is it's weakest attribute (aside from the cosmetic design) but it still makes a good bluray player. I just wish they were cheaper!

Actually, NOT a bad decision considering the games available are so been-there-done-that. Plus, as some have stated, not exactly the best wiht upconverting SDs. So, not really worth the $400 they want for the machine. Besides, I am still a firm believer that certain items were desinged to do specific things. Just because a PS3, which is first and foremost a "GAME CONSOLE", can play Brooo-ray does NOT make it the best as a stand alone player (and don't get me started as I've already heard the "coffin of death" storys from a few of you). I would much rather get a stand alone Blu-player because that's what it is "specifically" designed for.

Sorrry bud but I have to disagree w/you again. The PS3 is an A+ BLU-RAY player pretending to be a game console. The games will come dude, and once they do...I guess I'll be enjoying them and you won't. But "hey", dont feel alone with your opinions about the system, Home Theater did say this...
"Some enthusiasts BALK at putting a game console in their home theater system. I PITY them the SACRIFICES they'll have to make to stick to that."
BTW- I ran into your set at CC yesterday. VERY NICE!

I enjoy enough games on my multimedia gaming computer, which will knock the socks off of any game console out there. The PS3 has had how long now to get their shit togther and get a library of OMG games? Is it a little over a year now, or has it been longer, I forget?
Again, coffin of death, lame games, lame upconverting is enough for me to stay away.
I respect the effort to try and get me to change my mind, though.

The PS3 isn't that bad with upconverting standard DVDs, at least better than my HD-A2. Then again, I'm not exactly comparing apples to apples since the A2 cannot upconvert to 1080p.

They have been focusing on blu-ray, hello. And blu-ray is new. Game makers don't have it figured out YET. But once they do....They have a 50 gb disc to play with! Surely you are not blind to the possibilities of that! Also, playing games it not the same on a computer,(don't care what,or powerful) as it is on a HUGE screen with HUGE sound. But you go ahead and do what you have to do,it's your cash.

When I first got my last projector, I decided to temporarily bring my computer downstairs and tried playing Half-Life 2 on it. 130 inches of pure glory. It was so good, that I just cant play console games sorry to say, and I`ve seen the XBox 360 and PS3 big games. Gosh, I think I need an HTPC.

I did what I said I'd do over a year ago! Best Buy had an LG BH200 combo (Blu & HD DVD) player for $799 -- I found an out-of-the-box one for $399. I picked it up along with "Planet Earth BBC Series", "The Fifth Element", "Goodfellas" & "Troy" on Brooo-ray and "Stardust" & "The Kingdom" on HD DVD. So far everthing works like a charm and I'm very impressed with both formats. Everything I've seen so far looks awesome!
