loverboy,
like a typical republican, you resort to immature comments when confronted with facts.
please, please, please take up your buddy dubya's offer of not leaving any child behind. go back to third grade and learn the basics.

HD-DVD Chode Eddie speaks of "immature comments".
Here's one he just made today (enjoy) -
"i'm saving my friend from doing $300-$800 worth of damage to himself. meanwhile, you guys are just shooting from your fingers without any emotional investment in a friendship with tim. it's easy to type the type, but let's see you walk the walk as tim's friend, not just a blu-ray chode."
LOL - yeah, you've got the 'emotional' part down just fine.
Yet even Tim isn't interested (at this point) in suffering financial 'damage' by buying an HD-DVD player (as some suggested) and/or HD-DVD discs. But yet you Eddie, when others recommend he purchase a BD player, you continue your BITTER ATTACKS against Blu-ray... and label those who oppose your dribble as 'immature'. Uh huh.. yeah, right.
And politics yet again! ...very immature for you on a website WHERE MOVIES MATTER... you 'chode'.

loverboy,
you must've forgotten all of tim's rants against firmware updates during the past six months. even the best blu-ray player, the ps3, requires continuous updates in order to handle various minor software additions or hiccups. therefore, knowing tim's temperament, i'm advising against his buying something that will anger him, not provide him with the kind of enjoyment that he'd like to get from his new tv. my advice is person-specific to tim.
besides, tim didn't write that he had completely ruled out getting an hd-dvd player. in the first two pages of this thread, tim told everyone that he asked about getting an hd-dvd player at the store (not necessarily to play hd dvds but to use as an upconverter).
once again, loverboy, you have a problem distinguishing facts from fictions. you sound like those chodes who keep telling americans that the troop surge "works".

Tim can buy whatever player(s) he wants, but hopefully he receives better advice than what you've 'personally' said here today on DVDTOWN, being the HD-DVD chode that we obviously see!

Hey guys, all fighting aside, I did go up to Wal*mart today and NO HD DVD players, they had one Brooo-ray for $388 but none in stock, and NO PS3s available. It seems so odd to me because 99% of the people I see in Wal*mart don't look like they could afford to rub two dimes together. They look like the kind of people you see at the DMV.
Ok, I realize you guys are all excited to get me into the hi-def dics, and I too ma excited to get there -- especially after what I've seen on all the HD channels on my brand spankin' new HDTV! However, you guys do know I'm the kind of guy that will wait it out for the right time. It's obvious I will have to go Blu (no choice) and Eddie is right, I hate the damn profile update BS! Hell, I hate how Windows Vista wants to update every single time I boot my computer up! Nevertheless, it's an issues I'm going to have to get used to, obviously.
As I said early on, I would have purchased the HD DVD player had they had one in stock, and only for upconverting purposes. However, the tech guy that sold me the Samsung upconverter explained in detail the feautres and issues with each upconvert player available. Apparently, many players will claim upconvert to 1080p but don't actually deliver the goods. The player he sold me he assured me it is guaranteed to upconvert to 1080p on every single SD DVD you put in it. I'm inclined to believe it because I watched the poorly acted "Star Wars III" today and it looked amazing!
The thing you need to understand with Eddie, Jimi Love, is he feels a passion to not support a product that has won by underhanded business practices. And personally, I don't blame him. Eddie and I are the type of people that don't like to support greedy empires (Blockbuster comes ot mind, love). We all may have differences in our choices, but we should all respect each other for them. I can tell you, when the time comes that I get a Brooo-ray, it won't be made by Sony!

Tim,
Just to clarify: I didn't suggest your buying only an HD DVD player. I suggested that you buy a Blu-ray player, because that's where everything high def on disc is headed, but that you ALSO buy an HD DVD player because (1) they're cheap right now (under $100), (2) because they upscale so well (you can use it for that purpose alone), and (3) because there are many movies only available (right now) in high def on HD DVD, and the discs are super-cheap at the moment.
As far as worrying about the HD DVD player dying some day and your not being able to replace it, remember that you can still get laser-disc players cheap, a decade after their demise. There is no reason to suppose you wouldn't be able to buy an HD DVD player (used, refurbished, whatever) a decade from now.

To shop at Walmart is to support the "evil empire." (just write that down 1000 times and it will sink in)...
Bad decision also on you ruling out the PS3. Infact it is IMPOSSIBLE to buy any Blu-ray player without directly putting something into Sony's pocket. Even if you buy Panasonic or ANYTHING else, Sony is still GOD OF BLU-RAY.

Plus as John was saying HD DVD movies are super cheap right now. As in you can get a bunch of them for $11.95 and $13.95 which is nuts. Some of these movies won't make it on bluray for at least another year and you can bet the farm they will probably cost $25 when they come out on that format.
So why not buy an HD DVD player for like $75-$100, buy some cheap hidef movies now with 1080P/24 transfers and hidef audio to enjoy the brand spankin' new 50" plasma he just purchased. Plus it probably upconverts DVD's better than the Samsung he got anyway.
Now, IF he gets an HD DVD player it doesn't mean he won't get a bluray player down the road when he's ready to. He's just getting into hidef now for cheaper which is not a bad idea when you're trying to S-T-R-E-T-C-H your dollars.

too many nice comments for tim. hey Tim i hate you for having such a nice tv.
also, he is a big boy. as he stated, waited all this time, is up to him wether he wants to get a cheap ass hddvd player if found just to check it out. I for one, knowing all the facts and at this stage of the game, would buy it any how, with some extra money or whatever, just to check it out fully for myself, even if not buying hddvds, just add a few via blockbuster online to enjoy while i wait some more, and continue to upconvert with it. i dont like ps3 upconversion that much.
