Besides graphics, is it really any different? Explain.
And do the graphics make you feel sick...because they are so good? (meaning do you really feel like you are running over innocent people now.)

I could care less about GTA4. I like halo and spend all my time on that. Mario Kart I hear is the bomb on the Wii. I'd like to play that with its online capabilities. Mario kart on the DS is sweet too.

If killing cops and prostitutes and getting lap dances in a video game get people off then the world is already done! Don't expect this generation to do anything for us in the future. I know plenty of hard working adults will be buying this as well but I'd say there are alot of loser kids that are growing up with this stuff and they seem to be more and more desensitized every year. That's why we have 2.1 million people in prison in the U.S. alone. I saw on the news today some kid freaking out on the cops after he maced the people in a store and tried to steal a stack of GTA4 discs. What bugs me the most is that these games don't even shock anyone anymore. That tells me plenty. Kids don't differentiate the real from the fake after a while but you know tiny kids are playing this just as much as anyone else. Alrighty, now you can let me have it for saying something against the favorite game of all time, lol.

More of the same for me except updated graphics. GTA is so played out for me, personally I thought games like crackdown and saint's row have built more upon the Sandbox than GTA has since Vice City.

Wolvinator,
Well put! This game is hella fun...but it is not for anyone under 18 years of age. If any of you on dvdtown buy this for a kid, please let me know where you live, so we can "talk" about the issue face to face, before I kick your ass. (gt4 style ofcoarse)
"Letting a child play any of the GTA games is akin to, or WORSE than letting them view porn."

I agree up to a certain point with Wolvinator (let's not talk about his dislike for rated R movies...), however, and you ALWAYS forget, this kids have parents (well, ok, most of them)...
First things first, if parents don't teach their kids the difference of right from wrong, we're in trouble.
But we also have to realize, that everybody has it's own opinion and thinking, so even after parents talk to their kids, kids (and I'm not using the term loosely, since there are as many mature 16 y/o as there are 40 y/o) always have their say on what they do...
Now, I'm a 23 y/o guy, I don't have anything against rated R or unrated movies, I love to see action movies, violence, gore, profanity, etc, etc, etc...but that doesn't mean that I'm gona imitate every single thing that I see on the movies, tv or games.
We have a problem with kids and 'reality'...nowadays, there are no consequences to anything. Nowadays we don't have something we dream of, something that we dream of achieving...
And this game thing is the same as the gun thing...why blame gun makers because they make guns, when they are NOT the ones firing them? Why blame tobacco companies when they don't hold a gun to our heads so that we smoke (I don't), if WE KNOW nicotine is addictive and a health hazard? Why do we blind ourselves on saying that if somebody HAS to drink at least a 'glass of wine' is not a drunk, when the kid (yes, loosely term again) gets wasted on weekends only?
So, if I like Mario Kart, does that mean that I will want to throw turtle shells at other cars?? If I watch Terminator, I'll say "I'll be back" and smash a car into a police station? That if I see Deadwood I'll run to the nearest 'whore-house' to get serviced?
COME ON, GIVE ME A BREAK... and once again, don't blame first, SOLVE first...

Wolvinator, you are right, we have kids attacking teachers just to get it shown on YouTube. Kids attacking adults on public transportation, kids attacking everything and everyone. mvckalel, I'm not saying that video games is the problem but it's part of the culture of problem kids and and the parents are sometimes naieve, unaware, or in alot of cases unable to control the situation.

I laugh at the people when they use the phrase GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE The sole reason behind the invention of the gun was to kill. The Second Amendment has so much blood on it that it would probably take 200 yr ban on all guns to get them off the street.

Tony is right. It's the nudity in this console game that makes normal kids go to school and shoot their classmates. <Hey, I'm just trying to get into the "conservative mindset!>
I think the issue is a bit more complex than a lot of people think.

Tony... "Thou shalt not kill" is meant towards murdering other humans (with laws too), and not the 'object' that can be used to murder another, whether it's by using a person's hands, gun, knife, bow/arrow, sword, spear, scissors, poison, gasoline, fertilizer, box cutters... any/all other objects and things capable of killing. And a gun cannot kill anything, unless it's USED. If one breaks the law and kills another unjustly, it's the person who's prosecuted, not the 'object'. Humans are moral creatures, and capable of good and evil. A gun is a piece of machinery, and if one abuses it's use, and commits crimes, it's the PERSON who's responsible, not the object.
If you don't care for the 'right to bear arms' (second amendment) that's your free choice. But others obviously disagree, and the USA has had this legal right for a long time, so if you want to see this right removed, you would need to become a legislator and try your efforts where our laws are made... (and upheld by the Supreme Court - 2nd Amendment). And maybe not watch movies and TV shows that feature the use of gun weaponry...?
Edit: maybe I'm mistaken, but I believe you live in Canada (like Skyhawk, ReggieP and others?) - I honestly don't know what personal gun rights Canadians have these days (if any, other than for hunting as Skyhawk previously mentioned).

FYI other rights include collectors (my Dad is one), as well as other firearm related sports like target shooting, trap shooting, etc. Only rifles and shotguns can be used to hunt, but handguns are allowed for collecting and target shooting. And target shooting with handguns is only allowed at licensed indoor facilities especially built for this purpose.
In Canada other weapons are completely banned - including bombs (even little homemade ones) and exploding projectiles such as shells and missles of any size. Certain gasses and vehicles for their deployment are also completely banned for regular folk in Canada - including things like sarin and mustard type gasses. If that's not enough, included in this ban are many biological agents. Radioactive substances like plutonium are tightly controlled here.

Back to the game.
Been playing a little more and you can watch tv. Of all the sick and disgusting things in the GTA series, I think watching tv in a video game is the worst. Anyway they have a Ricky Gervais stand up which is hilarious.

OK back to the game, my 15 yr old son tried to buy the previous version of this game but was firmly turned down by a sales rep at gamestop. I've actually seen the game play on the previous version and it seems like a bunch of running around beating people up, car jackings, gang shootings, sex, and murder. Now it's on a next gen system. The graphics are now more graphic. GAME OF THE YEAR.
I remember when they tried to get Mortal Kombat banned.

Thats pretty much the game in a nutshell. Although throw in a pretty good story with great voice acting. Its obviously not for kids and shouldn't be sold to kids. I always go to gamestop and they even card me for R rated movies, its good to see this being enforced. You can't stop some parents from letting their 15 year olds play the game but that doesn't mean adults shouldn't enjoy the game as well.

I played the game (so what? that doesn't mean I'm gona go running to buy a gun and kill people...ugh, there goes the 'open minded' Americans...)...the graphics are great, just great. The driving now takes more skill than the previous, but you get a hang of it pretty soon. The music is great, with lots of variety. And the fighting (with bare hands) is challenging enough...oh, and the cops are a bit smarter than they used to (thankfully)...
So guns kill people?? HA HA HA...technically is the bullet...and technically anything in this world can kill you, even ourselves, and I don't see any of you making a whole argument about it...
Once again, GTA4 creates a surreal reality/environment for naive and unsupervised kids...they are smart, but stupid at the same time, and lack what most of us who don't do stupid thing does...PARENTS, get involved with your kids, it is the only way to help prevent this (although it's only merely enough)...if you want a gun, buy a gun. Remember that (at least in Texas), one can use 'full force' to defend one's property (house AND car), so no tresspassing people...

One of my co-workers bought this for the XBOX 360 and he says it's "grainy". I thought maybe he has his console setup wrong but he says Call of Duty 4 is spotless. He has the 360 hooked up to his 42" screen via components.
Weird. He says it's pretty much like the previous games except this city (Manhattan ?) is too dense. He liked the other maps from the previous games because they were more open.

STOP JACKING MY THREAD!!
gta i've been playing since it was a pc exclusive, part 1. and is not more of the same. watching someone play it, might show you the visuals, and minor things, but by playing you would notice the whole GTA 4 has been improved. I mean email, hack police car computers, go on dates with diff people or do jobs freely, surf the net... vehicles, air vehicles and swimming improved. play pool bowling etc. choose peoples fate, you dont have to kill everyone of corse is gonna have some resemblance, is freaking GTA. so STFU. lol
game is more free, realistic , full of options.
CELL PHONE usage is not limited, you can call who you want at whatever times-----you can watch just how the city people interact. people crash into each other, help eachother, try to beat you up. is funny as heck. im not an extreme gamer, but this game is solid.
on another note, i been playing shooting games since age 14. was good also very smart kid, growing up never getting in any trouble. PARENTING and growing issues...causes kids to go nuts. while at the store, some irresponsible mother was like, what is GTA? my son told me to buy it for his Bday. not even knowing what her son was going to play. there you go, nuff said.

also game has a dark feel, a little grany for the dirty city look. not clear and pretty in all areas, which what i believe the wanted it to look. you can tell this by the movies released before launch. inside nice buildings looks nicer and stuff.
so tvs with bad black levels, or grain issues, might make it look weird. voice acting is insane, you'll have trouble understanding some of the characters, well even the main character does at times... lol they have subtitles you can enable anyhow.
EDIT- Police response is better, more organized. hey even if more of the same, the previous gta game slook really dated... on an hdtv.. who wouldnt want such a good title ... or favorite game in 1080p huh??

Someone made a point about the soundtrack, believe it or not I grew up on N.W.A. and their last album IMO was one of the top 5 rap albums ever made. GTA previous sondtracks were the only thing that I really liked about the game.

Been doing that for years now, howabout something new? OH MY GOD!!! ADDED MINIGAMES!! That doesn't count. I would really like to see a classic spy movie/scenario made into a game like this. With lockpicking, cryptography puzzles, secret meetings and cummunications, sneaking around and maybe the occasional gun fight. Oh yeah, and car chases. The blatant violence doesn't offend me in any way or anything, it's just become so blah I guess. I need something new. I'm simply not into beating a hooker to death for her money anymore. And the added sex in the game isn't much of an appeal either. While some people are laughing about the rumble feature in their controller while having sex with a hooker made of pixels, they could be off having sex with a REAL hooker! lol

No, I mean change the whole time frame of the game to an early 40's era setting and have the main character be a James Bond spy type kind of guy. I don't mean call the game GTA5: Early Era Spy Movie, I mean actually build a new game on that concept. That's something i'd be interested in playing. If you haven't played it, check out Mafia. That's a good one. It's the closes thing to what i'm thinking of.

For those saying it's more of the same I must disagree. The online aspects alone are very new and original. I played cops and robbers with a group of friends and co-workers last night and had a blast doing it.
The character interaction and feel of the city have also been greatly improved. I'm a pretty big video game player. While I have never been a huge fan of the GTA series I must say that I have been blown away by the depth and quality of this game.

Online play in video game? How innovative
GTA 4 is great but to say there are big changes in the core gameplay is a little dumb and fanboyish. Just take it for what it is, an improvement on a proven game, there is nothing wrong with that.

Yeah I guess the other GTA games with online play set the standard. Oh wait there weren't any. So this is a new element brought into the franchise. What you said is about as pointless as saying it's played with a controller just like other games so therefor there is nothing new or innovative about it.

OK, I bought the darn game. I figure if people were waiting in line outside at 4am on its release date, and our little local store had 400 preorders, I want to see what the fuss is about.
And gosh, I'm not a console gamer and this will be my first. My PS3 was made to play Blu-ray - NOT games. Err... right?
Anyway, I'll try it tomorrow and give my impressions. I just hope I can play it with the Blu-ray remote, since I've never used the controller thingy before. If it sucks, everyone on this thread is in deep trouble!

We are talking innovation here. Are you honestly telling me that GTA 4 is innovative because they added online play and minigames? GTA 3 created the sandbox type video game and it had two spinoffs. GTA 4 feels like a spinoff rather than a totally new game.

Yes I can honestly say playing GTA online with 14 friends is a new experience not previously offered in any other GTA game. I guess had they made all the drug dealers hobbits and the police storm troopers then it would be completely new and exciting. Since they weren't thinking outside the box enough for that we are left with a HD version of GTA that builds upon the tradition set by the previous games, but does so with higher quality story telling. The game is averaging a 99% rating between both platforms at gamerankings.com so it's obviously one of the better games of this generation.

I just picked up God of War 2 for 20 bucks.(stopped paying 50-60-bucks along time ago...you guys can be the suckers.) Yeah. Anyway. Now that is a solid series. Awesome.
