It's the economy, stupid.
Gas prices are skyrocketing, homes are being foreclosed on, economy is weak...people aren't laying out money for the luxuries like they once were. An article over on Huffington Post earlier this week that even the wealthy don't feel wealthy anymore.
Jason, perturbed

"Oh no! we would'nt want the wealthy to not feel wealthy anymore!"
"What will we ever do without such high morals, and their perfect realization of the american dream?"
What was this thread about again...oh yeah.
I'm not surprised one bit. Did you not hear that it was "in vogue" to not spend on things you don't really need?
-blade (fearing depression)

Of course it's the economy. And BD's continued reluctance to lower prices doesn't help matters. Getting news from the Huffington Post, now that's another issue in itself...

Bladerunner,
I never said the wealthy not feeling wealthy was something for us to cry over. I was just mentioning something I read.
StevePro,
Agreed, it is left leaning, but no more so than Fox News does for the right.
Jason, not wealthy

Oh god!!! The ECONOMY!!!! Here's what i think of the economy right now:
I just ordered an 80GB Zune and a $300 pair of Sennheiser HD 595 Audiophile Headphones along with 6 more HD DVD's. Oh, woe is the American economy!!! It's called keeping some money in your savings account and spending it on things you want, when you want them. Jeezuss!! Quit crying!

I feel that Sony definitely needs to lower prices on standalone units if they want to reverse any negative trends. And the window to do this is not open forever. Its kinda like when you are interviewing for a job or trying to woo someone of the opposite sex. You only get a small window of time to make that first impression. If dvd owners continue to see high def movies as too expensive and not much better in picture quality than standard dvd by the time prices do go down it may be too late.

Spoon, while I agree with you to some degree I feel your comments are somewhat harsh. To imply that everyone who is having financial problems right now is just because they can't manage their money is a broad generalization and a stereotype. There are times when things can happen to you that are out of your control and that can strain a financial budget to its limit. For example: losing a job, unexpected medical bills from a sick relative or family member, transportation issues, natural disasters, etc.

For once I agree with Spoonie G, the people who can't afford HD equipment don't post on message boards neither do the people who can afford McIntosh Audio systems. I'm not by no means rich but dam even I can afford some luxuries. If you go through life depriving yourself of things that can make you happy then you'll go through life full of regrets and rescentment.

I can't afford an Onkyo receive and I post here...
Anyways, let's hope this lowers blu-ray player's prices...
I got a $300 b-day gift card from BB from my boss, and I first thought about buying a Zune or iPod...then a laptop...but I decided for a Wii and Mario Kart...now that is spending wisely...
