I disagree, and have enjoyed his 'mini' 1-minute audio movie reviews for many years now. Check out the LINK I provided above to "Recent Medved Movie Reviews" and listen to a few of his excellent mini reviews, which for the most part I agree with, and have long respected his opinions.

I don't really know anyone who takes him seriously as a film critic, but I guess the sort of person who would listen to Medved's show in the first place probably can't tell the difference.

chris,

you've argued with loverboy about medved going back to when loverboy first joined dvdtown. i suggest letting the republican chode listen to the mel-gibson apologist and ignoring him in general. there are better things to do in life than acknowledging loverboy at all.

Yeah Chris... like your 'career' as a movie reviewer has ever rivaled the success Michael Medved's - LOL (and his radio program receives very good ratings, by the way). Oh well, not everyone appreciates their fellow critics, or offers respect either... apparently.

LMAO!!!!

That was hitting below the belt, but funny as hell!

PS: Chris, sorry about jumping you ass a couple weeks ago in another thread, I was just grumpy because of some other issues in my world and I didn't mean to take it out on you. I know we don't see eye-to-eye on several films, but I do enjoy the differences we have -- it makes life more interesting for the sake of fun argument.

tim,

thinking back about "iron man", i think that it is one of the best, if not the best, adaptations of a comic book character. unlike just about every other such movie since tim burton's "batman" (1989), this one isn't self-important--which is a good thing since comic-book superheroes are so preposterous in the first place. i'm tired of watching morose tools mumble about their emotional pain. (dude, bruce wayne isn't the first guy in the world to lose his parents! peter parker isn't the first guy in the world to have to work his way through college! don't get me started on those x-chodes!)

"iron man" has fun with its universe, which makes it light on its feet. however, it's not silly like the "fantastic four" movies obviously are. the costumes are plausible and not cheesy (superman's outfit is the biggest reason why i won't watch the "superman" movies ever again.) this movie also avoids the plodding A-to-B-to-C-to-D literalness of "Batman Begins".

Eddie,

I have to agree with you on the whole costume thing, as I find the whole men in thights thing so rediculous. However, I like the more real-feel approach to "Batman Begins" but I know I've told you before I prefer my superhero films to have more of a solid, less fantasy outcome. I know it's a lot of reason I love "Unbreakabke" because it make me feel like it could be a real possibility.

Nevertheless, I should enjoy some of these films more because they are meant to be popcorn fun, but with all the tights and capes . . . give me a freakin' break! (I kind of liked how "The Incredibles" poked fun at the whole cape thing)

Oh, well, we all feel different things about the genre and it's interesting and fun to discover how each of us fell about these films. And coming from you and Chris enjoying Iron Man, it sounds like a fun and solid film -- I shall have to see it very soon.

Actually, Jimi, I don't know if Medved's ever been published in Cineaste like I have, but I'll grant that he's made a wee bit more money than me. I have recently broken into the triple digits in lifetime earnings, however.

However, his few published books on film have not exactly been kindly reviewed. Though it's hard to trash them since there's so little substance to react to. I can point you to dozens of far more respected, published and "successful" credits than Medved - people that actually have a concept of movie history, aesthetics, politics and whose reviews do something more than summarize plots and provide opinions. Like, y'know, teach you a little something.

And I'd challenge Michael Medved to a Movie Jeopardy contest any day any way.

I agree with Eddie that "Iron Man" strikes the proper balance between fun and serious. The best thing about it is that it isn't a ponderous, morose, self-absorbed tragedy. From a comic book fan's perspective, I would also say that it stays faithful to the books without being slavish to them. Favreau sticks mostly to the 1980s era Tony Stark (a la Bob Layton and David Michelinie), and none of the changes stand out and make a fan say "Oh, c'mon, that's not Iron Man!"

I wish there had been a good super-villain for him to face, though I have to admit that Iron Man's rogue's gallery isn't too inspiring. The Mandarin? Meh.

I guarantee you Iron Man 2 runs with the whole alcoholism story that was such a major comic book event, and should be fun to watch. Esp since Robert Downey won't need to do much research on the subject.
