You would have to be very naive to think that Toshiba didn't pay off Paramount. Its just like the Blu-ray fanboys who think Warner chose Blu-ray. Movie studios didn't give a damn about this format war, it was only a strain on consumers and CE manufacturers. The CE manufacturers are desperate to make sure optical disc for movies don't end up like music CDs. they want $$$ and they won't make any if downloads take off.

More on this story from EngadgetHD's website (followed by reader comments) -

Although it's all water under the bridge now, we still find it interesting that Viacom's recent earnings statement confirmed that Paramount received compensation for dumping Blu-ray. But contrary to the New York Times article, Variety is reporting that it was only $29 Million, instead of $150 Million. This is of course only cash, and it is still entirely possible that the other $121 Million included future revenues that didn't materialize once things fell apart, but we have a hard time believing Paramount received that much in promotional services or free replication. And while the Warner payoff rumors weren't from a source as sound as the NYT, we'll still be keeping an eye on revenue statements from Engadget and Warner's shared parent company all the same.

Sony paid off studios when it launched bluray to only release on bluray. Why? Well because bluray was an incomplete product and they had to pay off the studios to not release on HD DVD so that bluray would have a fighting chance.

You tell me. Which is worse? Releasing an incomplete product but marketing it to the public as a better product than HD DVD, or HD DVD paying Paramount to try and make things even?

Sony is worse than the evil empire in this format war and the consumers got duped big time. Now we have to wait for profile 2.0 players to become affordable so we can enjoy all the same features we have with HD DVD from the beginning. Yayyyyyyy.

i'm going to sit out of the current HD optical disc cycle. i've hated sony for a long time now (before there was even such a thing as blu-ray), so .!.. to that company.
