The price is not so great at almost $70(MSRP is $99.99), and the wait time of 4-7 weeks seems quite strange, but nonetheless, Amazon has the HD DVD version of The Jack Ryan Collection back up for order again if anyone is interested.

It's the same price as it was listed for before they pulled it, I just ordered it and they are giving me a June 10th estimated delivery date.
I am just guessing, but they may be waiting until they have a Blu-Ray version ready to release as well as the HD DVD version.

I start to wonder if Paramount still has a legally binding commitment to release on HD DVD, at least until this Fall or the end of 2008???
Yes, they are assumed to be Exclusively Blu-Ray now(The Blu-Ray Won concept), but the possibility remains that they are still somehow legally committed to HD DVD as well.
It sounds like the recent news that Paramount took the Toshiba $$$, so they might still have a legal HD DVD obligation.
Of course they will be releasing their catalog on Blu-Ray shortly, but are they back to remaining "Format Neutral" until their contract runs out????
Call it insane, but why would they cancel "The Jack Ryan Collection" on HD DVD, only to re-introduce it a few months later, after they have had enough time to press the Blu-Ray versions of the films??
Their delay might indicate that they are waiting to be able to release the HD DVD titles along with their new Blu-Ray titles
It's just odd that they are re-releasing one of their HD DVD box sets, after they supposedly dumped the HD DVD format.
Unless Amazon has made a serious error, and the Mid-June date range is for an exclusive Blu release, which has yet to be announced
Still waiting to see what happens...

VC... I don't think this situation is how you^ see it. We all know they had the JRC set already replicated, but the packaging indicated "special edition" content etc, and even some of the sets made it out for sale (and were purchased by a few consumers).
So, the set got recalled so they could likely repackage it correctly. Now what's strange (to me) is - WHY did it not get re-released in a non-SpEd labeled set? Maybe they were going to actually re-work the set, and this time include the SpEd content, but didn't get around to doing it before Toshiba's 2/19 announcement (ceasing HD-DVD support).
So... maybe what's happening is they want to get rid of (and $ELL!) those previously replicated box sets (that have just the movies only) - clear 'em out from the warehouse! To me this seems the most likely reason, as there currently is still a market for HD-DVDs, plus these movies currently are UNAVAILABLE on Blu-ray, so would definitely appeal to hi-def fans of HD-DVD.
I'd get them myself, EXCEPT (1) I don't care for all 4 of the movies, (2) I'd want SpEd content included too, and (3) at this time I'd rather buy a forthcoming Blu-ray set (going forward), but still, I'm not a fan of all 4 movies anyway. The HUNT... is great, but the other 3 are so-so and average... I'd rather watch the BOURNE series over and over again, than the Jack Ryan Collection. Or James Bond movies of course!
And I do own the Mission Impossible HD-DVD SpEd Box Set and it's fantastic!! As for the JRC, I own the SpEd SD-DVD of HUNT, and have rented the other three (DVD).

I have had mine on order with Amazon.ca since February...they keep sending me an update every couple of weeks telling me it will be a couple more weeks
Here is hoping that I see my order in the next little while because I really am not looking forward to dropping $150-$200 on eBay or buying a surplus copy from an zip.ca or netflix.com...

So we might actually see other HD DVD titles that were canceled show back up on the market??
There were quite a few HD DVD titles that were canceled at the last minute, when it was obvious that they were pressed and packaged, and some even shipped to stores
There is no denying that, because some canceled titles have leaked out in certain places.
The general consensus by many, was that they were to be recalled and destroyed, but after the Blu-Ray versions are released, they may instead be put back up for sale, in that there is still a market for HD DVD film titles, even though the player market is drying up due to lack of supply.
I doubt however that any new releases will show up on HD DVD, unless there is a great enough demand expressed by the consumer.
There is a fair sized installed base of HD DVD players in existence already, so there is the possibility of Paramount and Universal playing a minor Format Neutral game on some popular titles, but keeping the Emphasis primarily on Blu-Ray.
I could see Universal doing that more than Paramount as they have the most invested in HD DVD manufacturing lines(probably major contracts with the pressing plants), that they probably want to cash out and wind down on, instead of just turning off the lights.
Possibly doing as Warner has been doing, and still release the HD DVD version, only 3 weeks after the DVD and Blu Ray.
I doubt if it would continue past Summer though, just until they get Blu Ray up and running with a decent catalog.
Maybe longer if we don't start seeing those sub $250 Blu-Ray players hit the shelves, let Sony release a $250 PS3 and I'll likely buy a second one just for Blu Ray playback.

Well VC... on the above^, who knows for sure? The JRC was obviously already replicated (from last year), whereas any of the others previously 'announced' may not have ever been replicated, so no discs = no availability or sales.
That leaves the overseas markets, where HD-DVD still has some support for the time being, and going into the summer... but for how long? A format is 'alive' only as long as it's fed new releases, otherwise it becomes a collector's medium (previously released discs).
Keep checking for some import titles on HD-DVD to perhaps show up, but I don't believe it will continue for much longer now that the industry is rallying around a single standard for hi-def disc - Blu-ray.

I agree, LH. Paramount probably saw how much people were willing to pay for them on Ebay, and they took advantage of pent up demand and offered some up to Amazon to clear them out and make a buck. It's still odd that there's a 4-7 week lead time and that Amazon sold out of 'preorders' so quickly. I would think that Paramount may offer more copies for sale to Amazon because it's hard to believe they would have sold all the remaining pressed copies in one day.

Might one figure that the Bee Movie HD DVD, that had also been shipped to stores before being recalled is also sitting in a warehouse to be put on sale at a later date.
Perhaps after the May 20 Blu-ray release???
I thought they had a few leaked copies that went for $200 on Ebay.
My kids like the movie and I am planning on picking up the BR version that they can watch on the PS3, but it would not be surprising to see the HD DVD pop back up for sale again.
Online only of course, someplace like Amazon that can serve as a clearing house.
I doubt any B&M stores would be making space on the shelves for HD DVD's again.

WOOOOHT !!
Amazon is now selling the JRC Box Set for $959.59???
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000S0GYI4/ref=dp_olp_2
What a Roller coaster ride we are having with The Jack Ryan Collection.
Not that I figure that I'll ever see it delivered, but I ordered this 2 days ago from Amazon for only $69.95, as I know quite a few other people here on DVDTOWN.com did as well.
I called Amazon to ask WTF !!!!, and they are still promising delivery in mid-late June to anyone that ordered it while it was available for pre-order only a few days ago.

Hey VC... actually that ridiculously overpriced JRC HD-DVD offer is NOT being made by Amazon itself, but rather one of the third party sellers on their site. And now that those remaining few sets that Amazon was offering this past week are now SOLD OUT (those they had in their warehouse), that other 'joker' (seller) has jacked up the price of the set he/she has available for sale. Maybe Amazon will get more in, and then offer at $70 again... but they just might now be totally out/stock, and that could be it. Obviously depends if Paramount can supply them with any more unsold sets.

The Independent Merchant is listed as "Fulfillment By Amazon", which means that the Merchant completes the sale, but Amazon is still the distributor.
Fortunately the price has already dropped to $811.11 now
If I knew it was going to be this crazy I would have ordered TWO JRC box sets, 1 to keep and one to float on ebay for $1500.
At least their policy is that they don't charge you until an item ships, so I'll sit on a backorder for a few months, just to see what happens, since it costs me nothing, and I can cancel at any time.
I am still waiting for news on the Blu ray edition of the JRC to be announced, but I am afraid it will be street priced at $100 or more.

Yes VC, I do understand the "Fulfillment" terms by Amazon sellers, but as I said above, that OFFER is not being made by Amazon itself - rather it's by one of their third party sellers (and a USED/opened set at that - that price is crazy too).
FYI: Most of the Amazon 'merchants' pay a $39.95 monthly fee to sell on the site (and higher fees for additional services, like the "Fulfillment" option). However, individuals can sell on the site without a monthly fee, but any listing(s) last only 60 days (then you must renew each if unsold), and you pay (when sold) a per-item sales fee (I think it's a $1). Then, for both individuals and merchants, Amazon gets a final-value fee off the item's selling price (I think it's 15%) - this fee obviously varies greatly depending on the price you charge a customer for any item.
