The price is not so great at almost $70(MSRP is $99.99), and the wait time of 4-7 weeks seems quite strange, but nonetheless, Amazon has the HD DVD version of The Jack Ryan Collection back up for order again if anyone is interested.

It's the same price as it was listed for before they pulled it, I just ordered it and they are giving me a June 10th estimated delivery date.

I am just guessing, but they may be waiting until they have a Blu-Ray version ready to release as well as the HD DVD version.

I start to wonder if Paramount still has a legally binding commitment to release on HD DVD, at least until this Fall or the end of 2008???

Yes, they are assumed to be Exclusively Blu-Ray now(The Blu-Ray Won concept), but the possibility remains that they are still somehow legally committed to HD DVD as well.

It sounds like the recent news that Paramount took the Toshiba $$$, so they might still have a legal HD DVD obligation.

Of course they will be releasing their catalog on Blu-Ray shortly, but are they back to remaining "Format Neutral" until their contract runs out????

Call it insane, but why would they cancel "The Jack Ryan Collection" on HD DVD, only to re-introduce it a few months later, after they have had enough time to press the Blu-Ray versions of the films??

Their delay might indicate that they are waiting to be able to release the HD DVD titles along with their new Blu-Ray titles

It's just odd that they are re-releasing one of their HD DVD box sets, after they supposedly dumped the HD DVD format.

Unless Amazon has made a serious error, and the Mid-June date range is for an exclusive Blu release, which has yet to be announced

VC... I don't think this situation is how you^ see it. We all know they had the JRC set already replicated, but the packaging indicated "special edition" content etc, and even some of the sets made it out for sale (and were purchased by a few consumers).

So, the set got recalled so they could likely repackage it correctly. Now what's strange (to me) is - WHY did it not get re-released in a non-SpEd labeled set? Maybe they were going to actually re-work the set, and this time include the SpEd content, but didn't get around to doing it before Toshiba's 2/19 announcement (ceasing HD-DVD support).

So... maybe what's happening is they want to get rid of (and $ELL!) those previously replicated box sets (that have just the movies only) - clear 'em out from the warehouse! To me this seems the most likely reason, as there currently is still a market for HD-DVDs, plus these movies currently are UNAVAILABLE on Blu-ray, so would definitely appeal to hi-def fans of HD-DVD.

I'd get them myself, EXCEPT (1) I don't care for all 4 of the movies, (2) I'd want SpEd content included too, and (3) at this time I'd rather buy a forthcoming Blu-ray set (going forward), but still, I'm not a fan of all 4 movies anyway. The HUNT... is great, but the other 3 are so-so and average... I'd rather watch the BOURNE series over and over again, than the Jack Ryan Collection. Or James Bond movies of course!

And I do own the Mission Impossible HD-DVD SpEd Box Set and it's fantastic!! As for the JRC, I own the SpEd SD-DVD of HUNT, and have rented the other three (DVD).

I have had mine on order with Amazon.ca since February...they keep sending me an update every couple of weeks telling me it will be a couple more weeks

Here is hoping that I see my order in the next little while because I really am not looking forward to dropping $150-$200 on eBay or buying a surplus copy from an zip.ca or netflix.com...

So we might actually see other HD DVD titles that were canceled show back up on the market??

There were quite a few HD DVD titles that were canceled at the last minute, when it was obvious that they were pressed and packaged, and some even shipped to stores

There is no denying that, because some canceled titles have leaked out in certain places.

The general consensus by many, was that they were to be recalled and destroyed, but after the Blu-Ray versions are released, they may instead be put back up for sale, in that there is still a market for HD DVD film titles, even though the player market is drying up due to lack of supply.

I doubt however that any new releases will show up on HD DVD, unless there is a great enough demand expressed by the consumer.

There is a fair sized installed base of HD DVD players in existence already, so there is the possibility of Paramount and Universal playing a minor Format Neutral game on some popular titles, but keeping the Emphasis primarily on Blu-Ray.

I could see Universal doing that more than Paramount as they have the most invested in HD DVD manufacturing lines(probably major contracts with the pressing plants), that they probably want to cash out and wind down on, instead of just turning off the lights.

Possibly doing as Warner has been doing, and still release the HD DVD version, only 3 weeks after the DVD and Blu Ray.

I doubt if it would continue past Summer though, just until they get Blu Ray up and running with a decent catalog.

Maybe longer if we don't start seeing those sub $250 Blu-Ray players hit the shelves, let Sony release a $250 PS3 and I'll likely buy a second one just for Blu Ray playback.

Well VC... on the above^, who knows for sure? The JRC was obviously already replicated (from last year), whereas any of the others previously 'announced' may not have ever been replicated, so no discs = no availability or sales.

That leaves the overseas markets, where HD-DVD still has some support for the time being, and going into the summer... but for how long? A format is 'alive' only as long as it's fed new releases, otherwise it becomes a collector's medium (previously released discs).

Keep checking for some import titles on HD-DVD to perhaps show up, but I don't believe it will continue for much longer now that the industry is rallying around a single standard for hi-def disc - Blu-ray.
