as with john, i don't feel that "loud" is automatically "good". dude, one can play a mono movie from the 1940s and jack up the volume to 100 decibels to make it "loud", but it'd sound like crap. heck, most 5.1/6.1/7.1 movies sound like crap, too, because so many of today's mixes are filled with wall-to-wall noise that don't really advance the art of sound mixing.

"letters from iwo jima" is a fine example of artful sound mixing. there are many discrete channel effects that help localize off-screen action and give the viewer a sense of geography (i.e. the camera's relative location to where other people/explosions are).

the "bourne" movies have great use of sound, too--for music cues. a great example is during the foot chase in tangier. listen to how the mix bounces stereo music cues from left to right.

i'd also recommend "good night, and good luck." for its wonderful recreation of soundscapes from so many decades ago.

to be honest, "casablanca"--DD+ 1.0--sounds much better than "transformers".

okay, fine, you want an hd dvd with lots of "boom"? go for "the kingdom".
