Well I'm starting this new thread as unlike another thread - Toshiba have not announced a Super-Up DVD player for 2009.

What they have announced is a TV with a full blown Cell processor and a notebook with a spurs engine.

It looks like Toshiba are following what they said they'd do when they dropped HD-DVD. They intend to make SD content look as good as possible and digital distribution.

Quote:
The Cell processor in the TV will enable high quality up-scaling of SD content, the ability to play and record multiple TV programmes simultaneously and, should Toshiba wish to implement it, HD decoding - say, MKVs or HD DivX files on a NAS box.

English articles are wrong. As you may have noticed, I was quoting directly from Japanese articles, well before any English articles omitting Super Upconversion DVD players showed up. I confirmed it from two separate Japanese articles.

As you can see from this slide, a DVD player is clearly indicated as having built-in Super Upconversion.

Exactly, Super Upconversion DVD players are announced in Japan, but it never made it through English translations.

Deadmeat - While I'll agree both my link are in English the second link is to a Japanese site. On it there are 4 clear products mentioned and a DVD is not one of them so for that to happen the DVD would of had to be omitted rather than lost in translation.

I'm not saying a Super-up dvd player won't happen I think the Cell TV will be there main focus with perhaps a dvd player being an low cost entry into the world of Super-up.

EDIT***
Apologies Deadmeat - your linked image does indeed suggest a DVD player is on the way

Here is a link where you can find the entire Toshiba presentation in English and PDF format.

http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/ir/en/library/pr/pr20080508.htm

It starts on page 29 and page 31 clearly indicates a upcoming DVD player with "super-resolution function" that can create "Real-time creation of HD from SD" according to Toshiba.

I'm going to sound like a conspiratist but I can picture the studios lowering the video bitrates on DVD's so that this super upconversion doesn't look as good as it could. This would make consumers look more into hidef which is what the studios want. They want to sell and resell as much as possible.

If this super upconversion does become a reality and it's as good as the hype well it will be good for those that have huge DVD collections.
