Going Purple,

I just purchased for $400 the Samsung BD UP5000. I downloaded (via Ethernet) the Firmware updates and then set the player up after that. WOW!!! What a difference compared to my Xbox 360 Add on. No more shut offs in the middle of a movie, no more having a SD DVD freeze my HD Player. I can now enjoy the best of both worlds. My 60 inch Toshiba is the 2002 HDTV of the Year. Its 1080i, but never have had any problem with it. I plan on buying a Toshiba 1080p in a year or two when I do my next upgrade. I hooked the sound via optical through my 1000 watt RCA 5.1 Surround System and it sounded really sweet.

I imagine some of you will say you got to go HDMI and 1080p, but I have a wife and two boys and I had to sweet talk my wife into letting me get this Samsung player as a promotion in the military gift (E5 to E6, ANG). Plus my Toshiba HDTV has never had a problem and I had it in storage for 4 years (over a 6 year period), so I need to get my moneys worth. So, please understand not all of us have money to blow, or have a nice high salary job, or single with no responsibilities besides themselves.

I currently have 121 (34 free) HD DVD (check out my list under my profile), and later this month I will start collecting Blu Ray movies, but I will still buy the HD DVD versions of any movie that came out for both (I'm pro Toshiba).

I and my wife watched "Planet Earth" on HD DVD and wow it was so incredible. The Oceans Deep part will blow you away. The sound and picture is just amazing. I love this player so far. I just want to know since it has Ethernet will it handle all the new stuff the 2.0 players can do.

Please feel free to comment with your experience with player or any other player, or whatever you want to say,

Sincerely,

Welcome to the best of both worlds

I suppose three if you include SD-DVD )

I have only had a couple of momentary sound drop outs on the optical output with a couple of movies from England and Germany...Out of Sight was one and 3 Days of the Condor was another.

But ironically, the sound tracks played fine through the player's analog outputs.

Sit back and enjoy the best of both worlds

Thanks,

I am can't wait to see how Kingdom of Heaven (Directors Cut) on Blu Ray will look. I want to buy that movie, also Fantastic Four 2, and Total Recall, Stargate (Extended Cut), and both Underworlds.

Sadly I own Total Recall and Stargate on Blu-ray, and the transfers are not very impressive.

Yeah, but Total Recall is still a hoot to watch on either HD-DVD or Blu-ray...

True. My favorite moment that I never tire of is when Arnold says: "Consider this a divorce".

I'd hate to tell you how many times I've watched this movie.

uhhhhhh. i dont get it. you say something about not being a rich man, yada,yada,yada...but how many hd-dvd's do you own? see, this is exactly what is wrong with us. we are never satisfied with what we have. this is called "greed" and this is the reason why our country is so fucking fucked up right now. i'm not pointing my finger at the author of this thread. no offense bud. but it is exactly this kind of shit that pisses me off. people would kill to have the gear that most of us own, but to us....ahh it's nothing. UPGRADEABLE. iv'e said this quite a few times on here but i will say it again. "relax people! enjoy your gear, and be thankfull that the good lord blessed you with such fortune. you will never be "cutting edge" so stop trying!"

(the thread warranted the cursing, and i am sorry if i offended anybody)

Ok,

The guy who razzed me about my post. Well I am not rich, I'm in the military and the only reason I bought this player was because I sold a large portion of my movie and game collection (10 year collection) to buy this player. So don't tell me I'm rich. I know I'm not living under a bridge, but that's because I chose to do something with my life that didn't result in dropping out of high school, doing drugs, and sitting around drinking beer with bunch of loser friends who do the same. I chose to start a career (Air Force) after High School, get both of my BA's in Business Management and Marketing (both Summa Cum Lauda), start up a video game development studio and raise my two boys up right. America is the country of opportunity and everyone who works hard and makes the right sacrifices can live a happier, healthier, and better life.

So, now that I got everyone's attention. I would like some constructive comments that would give me advice (I am a nice and humble guy) on this player I purchased and their thoughts on Blu Ray, HD DVD, and the future of HD Movies and Players.

Very Humbly,

Hey what the heck is wrong with drinking beer with a bunch of loser friends? Especially when watching movies in glorious high definition?

Am I missing something here?

Falcon,

Summa Cum Lauda means tops in my class for both of my BA's. I had a 98% average in Business Management and a 97% average in Marketing.

Ulrich, I would recommend either a Samsung BD-UP5000 or the LG BH-200 as a solution that is about as future proof as possible. Yes, both players will play HD-DVD, Blu-ray and will do a fairly decent job at upscaling SD-DVD.

You can pick up this unit for about the same price as a decent stand-alone Blu-ray player...the $3-400 range.

Plus you have the added benefit of picking up used HD-DVDs at the local pawn shops for a steal

bladerunner1 relax. got watch bladerunner. everyone is here to discuss movies/players* dia, not how they got em or what the sold or who they killed to get em. *

of course not everyone here is rich... but im sure there are poor. middle class and wealthier people. who cares. some people get reward points to pick up free movies. some people know an employee that steals them, and some people did something with their lives and have money. buy em from a crack head... or steal them from netflix. i dont know.... point is relax... and yes alot of epople here have nice gear. boo hoo. the world is where it is today, because of alot of things... but go discuss that in another forum.

Hey sky. drink or do what you gotta do. just dont forget to go to work. lol

...work is dead slow today. maybe i should go to Best Buy and act like a regular customer. thats always fun. yes, while getting payed!

Kuco, bestbuy.ca is having an online only sale starting at 6 pm EST on Sunday until 10 am EST on Tuesday. Nothing to go crazy over but I did notice that receivers will be 25% off.

It's a long weekend up here in Canada so maybe thats why the sale is on. Hopefully you guys get some love over there too.
