Has anyone seen Speed Racer yet? Is it out yet? The release date says May 9th. I haven't seen it nor have I seen any comments about it yet.

Anyone?

It will be a rental then. I wasn't sure about this movie. It looked like it was teetering on awesome and bad.
At the same time I will have to watch it for myself.

I was going to see this on opening weekend but the reviews were so bad that I ended up seeing Iron Man instead. Glad I did as that was a decent movie.

Wow. It takes a single person on a forum to tell you about a movie they haven't even seen to get you to NOT go see it for yourself?

Don't be a drone, dude. Go see the movie for yourself if you are even the least bit interested in Speed Racer. I saw the movie and I thought the movie was one hell of a good time to go see with friends. Don't let other people think for you. Besides, it's $15 to go see a movie with a friend and have a good time. Get some popcorn and a soda and have fun. That's what going to the movies is all about.

Yeah, go waste $15 on an hour and a half of your life you can never get back!

While others don't mind wasting their time on tripe films ("Transfromers" drones ), others of us have this thing called "taste" and would rather not have our time wasted regardless if it's fun to go to the movies with a buddy.

The link I provided to all the reviews from RT are a lot more the ONE guy giving Ironbull some friendly advice. And, if you paid attention to the page on RT, you'll notice the RT Community tab where all the average Joes place their thoughts gave the film a whopping 78%.

However, I'm going with Eddie on this one, it's a disaster.

Stop with the Transformers hate!

Anwyays, Tim, is two and a half hours lost on that movie...and it's better if we spend $3 for two tickets at the 'dollar theatre'...and most of the reviews are negative towards Speed Racer...

Well, 78% on RT seems to be the majority of people LIKING the movie. Which puts your "taste" in the minority and mine in the majority. So if you were looking to make yourself sound more "tasteful" there or sound as if you have some superior sense of what a good movie is then you just did a fantastic job of sounding like a real dumb ass there. Besides, "taste" is just another word for opinion, Tim. As we all know, opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one, and they all stink. My asshole says Speed Racer was a kick ass movie.

And I think the word you were looking for there was "trite". Tripe is the lining of a cow's stomach.

To be fair, now that all the reviews are in, the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes is currently at 36%. Apparently, the 78% was from just a few early reviews.

Actually, what the 78% is from is the "RT Community". Meaning any average Joe (age groups from early teens to elderly adults) that are memebers of the site, meaning they all have the basic account much like we do at DVDTOWN. It isn't counted towards the Tomatoe-Meter, and is obviously opinions of fans that are more than likely to be bias in the first place. It's basically like having my mom tell me how great the film was, and I usually don't take advice from my mother when it comes to movies because she tends to give more "thumbs-up" than an Ebert & Roper Convention.

It's a nice feature as you can vary from one side of the fence to the next. However, I have found that the majority of the RT Community are full of youngsters that are still out of balance on what a good film really is. No offense, but life is all about learning through experience -- therefore, I'd much rather put my trust into the Top & Online Critics on RT.

I don't have an opinion on the movie (haven't seen it), but like Eddie implied, the movie's going to 'tank' here in the USA, and will NOT receive the expected high box office the producers had hope for.

However, it might become an overseas hit (especially in Japan, since they would like much of the anime features in the film), and could end up eventually with a small profit overall... will just have to wait and see. Then home video will bring in revenue too. Soon however, it definitely will be forgotten by most movie goers with the release of PRINCE CASPIAN, the 2nd Chronicles of Narnia epic from Disney. Them folks at Disney usually make the 'script quality' a primary issue for their film productions.

And hey, I always did love the classic Speed Racer TV show!

And that's why I will not go see this movie. When they do an animated series into a movie it sucks. The Transformers for example. Megeatron (a German Ruger pistol in the series) never got the best of Optimus Prime. The only cube they battled over was the Enerjon Cubes not one big cube. Sure they had robots on earth but their home planet was Cybertron and it had two moons. Devestator was not a tank he was a giant robot formed from construction robots called Constructacons. Soo many movies go off track from the series it's not even funny.

Even the Speed Racer Cartoon sucked! Yeah, I was about 12-years old when it came to American TV in the late 70's. Sure, all us kids were drawn into the hype, but, like Scooby-Doo, we all reailzed that each episdoe was just the same crap done over and over. Back then, the whole hype of it died a quick death, which surprises me that they even attempted to make a movie in the first place.

It blew donkey vomit, and yes, I'm a bit bias on my hate towards it. You see, Speed Racer in my days represented a change in the cartoon entertainment world. Back then, none of us kids knew what "Anime" was and we were spoiled with the Satruday moring routine of Buggs Bunny Road Runner Show and anything Hanna-Barbara had to offer. Saturday mornings ruled and it was all us kids looked forward too! Once SR came along, then all the cartoons started to change to a family friendy format and everything was about teaching kids lessons in life! Us kids spent the last five-days in school and the last thing we wanted was to be taught a lesson! We wanted entertinment!

I guess at some point there must have been a group of right-wing, fundamentalists that bitched to the FCC about the violence of WB cartoons and ruined it for everyone! By the early 80s, Saturday mornings became the lamest programming on TV, as there was now a plethora of PBS style cartoons and cheap Anime that wasn't worth spit. In my opinion, SR represented the beginning of the decline in entertaining animation. Hands down, you can't beat Buggs, Daffy, Tom & Jerry, the Jetsons, the Flintstone's, etc. Cartoons should make us laugh with relentless violence and not give us the, "hey kids, don't talk to strangers" crap at the end of every episode!

Thanks, Tim. I didn't even know RT had a readers' rating tab. I see that IMBb's user rating is 6.6/10, though, and that the box-office receipts for "Speed Racer" are not what the studio expected.

I think the movie makers were just lovers of the cartoon and over estimated that there was a large group of fans waiting for it. The news media down here in the valley were talking about that the real hype was coming from all the novelty items being sold over the years (T-Shirts, coffee cups, baseball caps, etc) and not the cartoon itself. Many of these items are known as "cult-novelty merchandise", and the selling of them has turned out to be far more popular than the TV show. It's kind of like making a movie out of an action figure when you think about it! What's next, a "Hot Wheels" movie!?

They're releasing "Meet the Spartans" on Blu-ray soon. Is Speed Racer as good as that movie?
