I have seen many plasmas but don't remember seeing one this cheap with a 1080p resolution.

Personally I don't have the cash for this but thought you guys might be interested if looking for a good priced television.
Am I right to think this deal is amazing or is there something wrong with this particular set?

wolvinator... do a double-check!

That Hitachi model <link (from your message above) - according to a feedback note on the newegg website (just posted today), well there is some confusion, as it does not have 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080), rather, unlike most other displays, this Hitachi has a native 1080i (interlaced) resolution, not progressive (most other brands). It seems that way from scanning the site's page.

Yes, it will accept and display native 1080p signals (Blu-ray, HD-DVD), but from what I understand the set then scales at 1280 x 1080 resolution (1080i). It's confusing since Hitachi has used the term 'HD1080' without being specific, so it's up to the reviewer or consumer to verify each model, whether p (progressive) or i (interlaced). I'm just going by what the customer said in the New Egg product link (that it's actually 1080i). ALTHOUGH ANOTHER CUSTOMER SAYS IT'S ACTUALLY A 1080P MODEL...?

My gripe with Hitachi plasmas is due to their own plasma technology (called ALiS - see alphabetical-info LINK), which produces poor black-level performance (less contrast) than any of the other major plasma brands, such as Pioneer, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, etc. Also, Hitachi video processing in the past (of 720p, 1080i, etc signals) is of less quality than the software chips used by the other name brands.

I highly recommend (for consumers looking to save money but buy high-quality), is to check-out some of the Panasonic plasma models, especially -right now- as the 2007 models get closed out at bargain prices (to make room for the forthcoming 2008 models, of higher price). You can also check Costco, Sam's Club, Fry's, Micro Center, J&R (New York) etc for prices.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Hitachi, and don't recommend them - buy a Panasonic (or Pioneer) for the best quality plasma, followed by LG and Samsung.

Thanks for that info. We had bought many of the Hitachi hard tube tvs for classrooms in the school system I work for so that teachers could hook their computers up to them. They were of high quality so I had no idea that the plasma models would be lacking compared to other models.

Alrighty then, scrap that deal, lol.
