PS3 Menu Problem:

My PS3 is connected through HDMI to my Yammie RX-V863 receiver and then to my Pio Plasma. The problem I am having is this: When I start up everything (no BD in PS3) I cannot see the PS3 menu screen ( I do hear sound, however). This is a HUGE concern to me. If I pop in a BD, the movie starts right up with no problems. I still however, cannot view the PS3 menu if I stop the movie. This will in the future, obviously cause problems if I need to update the PS3. I will be unable to update, if I can't see the blasted menu!

Any solutions, folks?

But if I were going to only need the menu to update it I know what a pain it can be to send something back to get it fixed. I would just try to see if i could see the menu with a different method of hook up straight to the tv. Since you would be doing this only every few months I would think it easyer than sending it back if something were wrong. But then again it could be something else.

Wolfen, I'm gonna have the same setup as you :p PS3, Yamaha 6180 (practically the same as the 863 you have) and Pioneer plasma.

One thing I would try is another HDMI cable. Also try a different HDMI input on the Yamaha and the TV if it has one.

If all else fails call Sony Playstations tech support and Yamahas also (they have been superb with me in the past).

Let us know what you find out.

I've already tried the cable (bought a brand new one, in fact). That did not help. I will most likely contact Sony to find out WTF is going on.

More suggestions are welcome from PS3 owners...

It may be the signal 'communication' between the PS3>to Yamaha>to HDTV. You might want to try this (worth a shot)...

Turn on the power for either the PS3 or Yamaha first, then make sure the HDMI input on the Yamaha is the one for PS3, and -then- turn on your Pioneer plasma's power last, and then select the HDMI input for viewing your PS3's picture (menu).

I had this happen once also, with my new Pioneer plasma and PS3 too (directly input to one of the plasma's 4 HDMI inputs), but after I did the above, the PS3 menu always is visible, even if I change inputs on the plasma afterwards (checking out a TV show for example, and then going back to the HDMI that has the PS3 input).

I simply think it's related to the HDMI 'communication' hand-offs etc.

If the PS3 is set to auto-detect anything, it will contact your receiver and your TV through HDMI to query these devices' specs during the HDMI sync. If the receiver is capable of any video processing rather than simple pass-through (even if you have it set to passthrough) the receiver itself will usually query the TV for supported resolutions, etc. These devices have to be "on" (obviously) for the query to work. So I'd try turning on your devices in this order, and waiting for each to boot up fully and sync before turning on the next:

1. TV
2. Receiver
3. PS3

There could also be something wrong resolution-wise in your PS3 settings, or the TV is sending it the wrong resolution. I'd go into the PS3 settings, and make sure the correct resolutions and such are set as well.

your resolution is set wrong on the ps3 menu. you are going to have to find a way to navigate the menu without being able to see it, or put it on a different television and do it that way. You should be more careful about what you put your settings to if you don't know what your output actually is.

This fix was found at several different forums, so i assume that is your problem. If not, then sorry about my remark about you being careless with the ps3. Out of the box, it is set to 480p. The problems seem to be occuring with units switched to 1080p, or 1080i, when the tv is 720p or something else.
It could be that your tv is not set to display 1080 somehow,.. OR, it is a p instead of an i or vice versa.
EDIT: apparently there is a secret video setting reset that can be performed by turning off the ps3 and turning it back on using the button on the ps3 console itself.
Perhaps you did this and the tv cannot read 480P? you should always start the ps3 by pressing the ps3 button on the controller.

are you trying to troll or are you actually worried that one day something you neglected and abused will not be held under warranty.
fyi: The dust in that specific machine you linked to caused overheating and warped the motherboard causing a "red ring" effect. Sony released pictures of the unit online and then also replaced his console. He had no right sir, no right. Only a rich kid like himself, who could afford to pay (i think it was) 2000$ to buy the unit via ebay on launch day would think he is entitled to any such replacement. By linking to that case you not only propagate the sony bashing, but look like i fool, though we all know you are far from it. If you are going to be anti-ps3/sony whatever please use grievances that have warranted basis.
Btw: the OP (according to many on numerous forums) probably either has his tv on the wrong settings, doesn't know his tv settings, or set his ps3 to the wrong settings thinking that his tv was something it wasn't. Easy mistake but it's actually kind of humorous to see the coincidence of you posting a topic that also had some form of neglect involved imho.
PS:not that OP is neglectful, but i do believe he changed the default ps3 video settings and either moved the ps3 to another tv or did something else that would have called for an unexpected settings change.

Wolfen the same thing happend to me last night when I first hooked up the PS3. I think it was when it asked me if I wanted the PS3 to automatically configure itself for optimal settings and I chose No. It was either that or I when I chose the wrong resolution. I thought of you right away cause my screen went black but I could hear the audio sound it makes when you navigate through the menus. The little clicking sound or whatever when you scroll left or right to highlight a different option.

What I did is turned off the PS3, turned the switch off in the back (right above the power cord), unplugged the powercord for 30 seconds and then plugged it back in. Turned the switch back on and turned on the PS3. I could see the menu again, it asked me all the questions again and I chose 1080P as the resolution, and clicked yes for optimal settings and this time I was able to see the menus.

No Mr Proof00 I just thought the audio was funny. Calm down. You shouldn't take life so seriously, its not like any one ever gets out alive. I don't really like the ps3 over the 360 for games but I am pretty sure it plays Blurays alot better. I don't know why but every time I put a Blu-ray in the 360 I get an error message. Do you know how I might be able to fix that?

I fixed it on my end.......

operator error. I had the PS3 hooked up to another TV (gaming Vizio - 1080i). I moved it to my Pio (1080p) and Yammie and then had the menu problem. It's fixed now.

I still say the PS3 is the best option at this juncture. I am beginning to see Henning's points however and I will most likely give the PS3 to my daughters when the Panny 50 comes out.

Or you could trade it in for one of these rigs...

My brother wants to build a wooden mock race car and put the stering wheele controler in it to play grand torizmo so its like being in a car. (and yes he is very much old enough to drive a real car.) Also though god of war is a great game, and i think resistance 2 looks like a fun game. But nothing compairs to Socom. That was the first game I can remember for a concole that had voice recog.
