~ Forthcoming Daewoo BDP-1000 player

> BD-Live, Chinese Players Expected in 2009 - Excerpt from article...

Over at ZDNetAsia we read that eleven Chinese disc manufacturers have been authorized by Blu-ray Disc Association to produce Blu-Ray discs and disc players next year. Interesting to note this article states that the BDA’s member number has increased to 187 while that of International DVD Forum has decreased to 163.

We also see that Home Media Magazine summarizes the players coming to the market - (also view player IMAGES here <broadband connection required to view) - including the Daewoo BDP-1000 (pictured at top above) and BDP-2000 BD-Live capable players with 1080p/24 mode, 1 GB of storage, SD Memory Card slot and HDMI 1.3, due in the fall. They also list the Panasonic DMP-BD50, two Sony’s (BDR S350 and S550) and the Playstation 3 for BD-Live capability.

For Bonus View players > they list the two by Pioneer (BDP 51FD and 05FD), the Sharp BD-HP50, Marantz BD8002, the Philips BDP7200, Sylvania NB500, Samsung BD-P1500 and the Denon 2500, along with a quick summary of features. Well worth a look.

We also read via The Digital Bits that Denon is considering a Blu-ray player with SACD and DVD-Audio multichannel playback.

This is good news! I'll take the middle one please. Err... I mean the player instead of the computer or internal BR drive.

Seriously, this competition is going to help lower prices this holiday season I bet, and at the least give consumers some lower priced options. But I can't figure out why the excitement isn't at least half as high as when the Venturer HD DVD player was announced (that turned out to be a rebadged Toshiba A3). Oh well...

I still think there is some skepticism amongst some HT enthusiasts. I know my self, after my esipsode, I'm still a bit weary of the players and the technology. I do have a BD-ROM drive for my computer, but as a the stand a lone machine goes, the machine I would trust is still $700. $525 from my wholesaler...

1. Daewoo isn't a Chinese company.
2. Those aren't Chinese girls in the pics.

Deadmeat... is ^that all you have to say about this recent news?

OK (correction), so it's 11 Chinese manufacturers and ONE from South Korea (Daewoo) (and the pic of the pretty girls showcasing Blu-ray is just a 'file photo' I picked up from Google Image search - not implying any particular Asian nationality here , I just liked the pic)

The importance of this news is we see that the "blu ball" is rolling along! By next year, the Chinese will be making lots of players, and with even better prices due to competition. Now, if the studios would get ALL their new/catalog releases down to $24.99 MSRP (or about $15 street price, and Amazon price), then some serious collecting could result. Overall, I'm still renting more BDs than buying (obviously), but am always on the lookout for sales, which are starting to happen more often lately (and going forward), no doubt due to current economic conditions here in the US.
