Hey spoonard... the other Engadget website - EngadgetHD.com - has comments indicating it's Profile 1.1 (w/Bonus View), and "this is the same Funai player [Magnavox branded] @ Wal-Mart for $298." Also, with Walmart's constant discounting, the price could fall down to $199 by Christmas (another comment).

As announced in early January (<details), the OEM manufacturer Funai is making these players for sale on various names at retail - BEST BUY Insignia BD player. The parts inside the machine are mainly by Sony, and the chipset/processing is provided by Panasonic - so these players should be fine and very good quality.

Obviously BD-Live (profile 2.0) is not provided on this model, but this is only a concern if owners want to connect to the internet for some of the discs that included internet-based bonus content. Most comments I've read so far of web-based BD bonuses, indicate it's not all that great, with the option not fully exploited yet to the potential imagined by some.

The only problem is when 2.0 hits and the hardware is changed to the more generous 1GB of storage space on the players. What about other BD users who don't have a 2.0 player and the movies really start taking advantage of the extra storage space with the extra features and such? Then everyone (well everyone who is interested in using the new features) has to buy a new player. That's why i'll be waiting at least a year AFTER 2.0 hits to get a Blu-Ray player. I got a nasty feeling Sony will introduce another spec after 2.0. I won't have the rug pulled out from under me again. I don't understand how everyone is just diving headlong into BD with it not having a finalized spec even now.

Best Buy has it for $350

This is pretty much identical to Walmart player, meaning $250 is the lowest Funai can go wholesale wise.

BTW, $250 = wholesale price, add 15%~30% retailer markup to the price.

Remember, HD DVD players had Internet connections from day one, and studios never really exploited its possibilities except to offer firmware downloads, a few wallpapers, and an opportunity on one of the "Potter" films to watch it with friends at different houses. Whatever happened to just watching and enjoying the movies?

This is pretty much the same exact unit as the the one sold at Walmart under the Magnavox brand name. Some guy on Blu-ray.com bought one (the Magnavox one) just to test it out, and he said it is quite good when it comes to PQ and load times. He also bough a two year extended warranty for it (just in case ) for like $17. I think he's thinking about keeping it.

Don't expect cheap Blu-Ray players.

Blu-Ray was never meant to be cheap. And even value-oriented brands like Funai depend on Sony and Matsushita for 90% of component, hence their cost isn't any cheaper than Sony's.

The first announced Taiwanese Blu-Ray Profile 1.1 player is priced $997, thanks to Sharp supplied core component.

There is a good reason why Sony lost $4 billion on 10 million PS3 shipped over two years.
