OMG. What a ride. This film has something of the best footage I have ever seen in HD. The colors were powerful and natural. The editing of the film fantastic and exciting. My 1080p projector have never delivered something looking so perfect and film like on the about 120" screen.
I'm still kind puzzled about the fact that my new favorite demo material when it comes to image quality and HD show off now comes from a movie filmed in 1966. If you love motor sport don't miss out on this great movie.

The sound is ok which is fine cause quite frankly some of the racing footage is absolutely amazing. There is no way they can film a movie like that today because the insurance companies simply will not allow it. There are some scenes that were filmed from a helicopter that is almost right beside or above the cars as they race around the track. No way that's being done in any movie today.
If you like car racing this is reference quality video and some of the most fantastic racing footage you will ever see.
Funny enough I only decided to see this movie because of Johns review which you linked above. I ended up buying it and still enjoy showing it off to friends.

Sometimes, I think I'm talking into the wind. (Oh, John, poor John, he's hanging in the closet and feels so gone.)

Just a little cinema humor, as in "Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feeling So Sad" (1967, Robert Morse, Rosalind Russell).
But your response is cuter, Falcon.

Very true. And we may not see too many more older classics restored and remastered for high def, either. It costs a lot to process a whole film this way, and the returns are relatively meager. Not even the Kubrick films remastered for high-def sold all that well. It's just much more cost effective for a studio to use whatever master they happen to have for a high-def transfer, whether the master needs cleaning and restoring or not.

I guess it is a statement to the fact that quality is not the biggest factor when it comes to selling a lot of units.
However, with computer power getting cheaper each year and software getting more intelligent you can get a long way for a reasonable price.
Here is a story on the restoration process of the first 3 Indy movies when they were first released on DVD.

I remember reading about an interview with John Lowry himself and when he was asked about the restoration process he said that actually could have spent a lot more time making it look better but I guess George said it was good enough.
