Went to the Walmart today to pick up a copy of "Rambo" on Blu Ray. When I first walked in the door, I saw a pretty large display stand (you know what I'm talking about) sitting there with a few copies of the SD discs left. I walked past it with my nose held high and preceded to the back of the store to grab my Blu Ray copy. When I got to the back of the store I saw another large display of standard Rambo discs that had been hit pretty hard. OK...

I picked up the two disc set off that rack(just to check it out) and walked back to the (very new, very large) Blu Ray ISLE. Yes my Walmart now has an "Isle" for the Blu. ANyway...I saw my BR copy sitting there picked it up and started to read it over. This is when a Walmart employee aproached and asked me if I needed any help. I kinda chuckled to myself and said "Why yes you can. How many copies of this have you rang up today(holding up Rambo)?" "NONE" was his answer. "ZERO." Suddenly things werent so funny anymore, and it all started to become very clear to me what I had to do.

I put my Blu Ray copy down. Picked up the two disc standard dvd, and purchased it instead. And I left the store feeling beaten.

Until I see change. I think I'm going to suck it up, go with the flow, and be just like everybody else. I don't want to get stuck with another dead format.

Wow, now that was an interesting little anecdote there on your part. What exactly did you achieve by putting down the Blu-ray version and buying the DVD instead? Absolutely nothing. And that conclusion of yours.... whatever....

Granted, I don't want to be on the short end of another dead format either, but that seems like kind of a weak reason not to buy the disc you wanted. If you want to buy Blu, buy Blu, and if not, don't. I've always been of a mind that only certain titles are worthy of the extra cost, but I don't think I would spend the same amount of money on a non-HD disc just because some kid at Wal-Mart told me they weren't selling. Frankly, the only discs I've ever bought at Wal-Mart have been from the bargain bin. If I want a new release, I either order it online, or go to a store that specializes in movies. For all you know, the local HMV (or equivalent) sold 20 copies that morning. Personally, I haven't seen it, so I don't know if it's worth the $30 price tag, so I'll wait and buy it previously viewed for $7-10, and if I love it, I'll sell it back, and look for a cheap copy of the Blu disc on ebay or the like.

This reminds me of something I was thinking of, though. I almost want Blu to die in a year or two, because then I can build up a big collection for next to nothing, like I have with HD DVD. Then I can enjoy that collection, and pick up the next big thing.

I guess I missed your point. It sounds like you have a Blu-ray player that you are afraid will some day break down and stop playing discs, and you won't be able to replace it or get it fixed, so if Blu-ray dies, you'll be stuck with a load of unplayable discs. Therefore, you're not going to buy another BD disc. Seems to me that there will be a day when we probably won't be able to play regular DVDs, either--in other words, many years from now. In the meantime, as other people here have pointed out, aren't you just stopping yourself from enjoying high-defintion picture and sound?

Well, to each his own. But it appears to me that a perfectly good Blu-ray player may now be going to waste.
