It should come as no surprise that The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be making its way to Blu-ray, the victor of the format war, yet the announcement still sends scintillating shivers down my spine. Peter Jackson, director of the trilogy, recently revealed the existence of the LOTR Blu-ray when discussing the upcoming Hobbit film.

"We are working on a Blu-ray version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won't be this year."

So there you have it, official confirmation from the horse's mouth. We'll keep you posted on when you'll be able to acquire the one Blu-ray to rule them all.

It just keeps getting better and better for Blu-ray. I'm glad the better format won!

Sorry, Inspector, but the winning format had nothing to do with it. New Line has been preparing a high-definition transfer for the "LOTR" trilogy for quite some time, long before the present format was decided. If HD DVD had won the war, New Line would have issued it in that format. If both formats had coexisted, they would have released it in both of them.

Good to have "LOTR" in high-def in any case.

Do we know anything about the Blu-Ray releases yet? I've been trying to hold off on buying the extended versions, but if the BR versions won't have all the extras, I may just pick them up used and watch all the special features and extras upconverted and buy the Blu versions for the movies HD. I really hope I won't have to do that.

I really am. I had hoped for a late fall release since I was ready to watch these amazing films again.

Hendrix from those stills it doesn't look THAT much better to me. Maybe the difference will really be noticeable on a screen or TV.

I wonder how much they will cost.

Falcon, someone did some mouse-overs on the full 1080p frames but I can't find them now. The difference was incredible. I'm definitely holding out for the HD version even if it takes a year or two.

Sky, I know I'll be buying them also if the transfers look really good which I expect them too. I just don't really see it in those pics. I'm just hoping they don't cost $100 or more for the boxset.

So far the upconverted DVDs I've watched look very good. However, my extended editions of LOTR had too much saturation and contrast. I really had to play with the settings to get a good picture. overall, it wasn't that bad but I'd have to rate it as one of the worst I've seen upconverted. I mean, the greens in Hobbitron looked unnatural, but making the minor adjustments took out too much color on skin tones, so this upconversion was a bit of a challenge.

I'm happy to see the BR versions are in the works, but I'm only interested in BR versions of the extended editions. So, perhaps my wait will be even longer.
