Sony CEO Howard Stringer confirms in an interview with WSJ that PS3 was a catastrophic financial disaster enough to bankrupt Sony and Sony was ready to pull the plug on PS3 last summer(Summer of 2007).

Had Microsoft given a little more marketing push(a price drop to $299), then that would have pushed PS3 over the edge and force Stringer to pull the plug on PS3. Satisfied with $70~150 profit that each Xbox 360 sold was bringing in, Microsoft was content with the market situation at that time and allowed PS3 to survive.

They are two of the most greediest corporations out there. Coincidentally they both try and shove proprietary crap down our throats so they can control more markets.

Falcon,

So both Sony (backer of Blu Ray) and Microsoft (backer of HD DVD) are greedy? Seriously? Based on some people around here, you would think Microsoft was a knight in shining armor while Sony was trying to murder all our babies.

I think it's funny that anyone would think ANY corporation was "good". There are no good corporations just one's with better spin doctors. They're all after profit unless they wanted to be out of business next week.

Yes of course they are all after profit but it's the way that some go about it that bothers me. Sony has ALWAYS tried to sell proprietary hardware which drives me nuts. I honestly think they would sell more products if they tried to sell products that worked with everything, not just Sony products.

Microsoft, well, just pick a lawsuit and it explains itself.

I am sure none of you will remember this, but right after Toshiba tossed in the towel, I made the same statement. That if Microsoft would have put a little more effort into HD DVD, we would all be seeing red. I actually made mention throughout the entire WAR, that HD DVD could not lose with BILLY GATES behind them. Yea I know shoulda coulda woulda, but I was very outspoken about Microsoft and their backing.

I think the biggest issue by far was the advertising, or lack there of. The marketing for HD DVD, and the product placement, was downright pitiful. I have never seen such bad marketing for an emerging product in my lifetime. It's as if they were hoping that word of mouth would be enough and they wouldn't have to spend money on ads or marketing in any way. I still think Bestbuy was a big HD DVD killer with the misinformation the sales reps were giving consumers from the beginning. Remember the ol' "HD DVD is only 1080i and bluray is 1080P"? Plus people did not know for a while about blurays interactive issues or the whole profile 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 etc.

The past is the past though and there is no going back. At least I don't think there is unless the studios themselves decide to revive HD DVD which I doubt very much. Hopefully a lesson has been learned for many.

yes IB i remember, but your just some guy in the forum, and MR sonny making an official press release is alittle more believable.

To me his just trying to throw some nagative spin towards MS. cause we all know they both have their dirty tricks... MS is the girl that sleeps around, but no one knows for sure.. just hears rumors. SONY is the PUBLIC HOE of the town.
