I realize that all displays are different. But just out of curiousity, what do YOU have your display settings at? And what IS your display? Please be as specific as possible. I would like to try your settings on my set, and see what I get. Here are mine.

Samsung 56' DLP HL-S5687W 1080p (2007)
Movie/Film Mode
Contrast-90
Brightness-43
Color-45
Sharpness-25
Color Temp- Warm 2
(no enhancements)

I have a Optoma H30 DLP front projector so my settings may not benefit your display.

bladerunner... you keep your contrast level set at 90% (of the total available) - ? That's extremely high, and would mean your black levels in darker scenes will be (unnaturally) brighter - really noticeable when you watch with the lights out.

Out of 100%, I keep my Pioneer KURO plasma's contrast levels between 35 to 40% (in the Movie mode), usually set to "38". This along with somewhat lower brightness levels, reveals a strong contrast between dark/light elements of the content's image. Bright scenes are definitely bright, but dark scenes are definitely dark, yet still the minute details of objects are easily seen/noticeable (because of the superior KURO plasma tech).

I recently rented the BD of Alien Vs Predator: Requiem - man, is this film incredibly LAME and so BAD compared to all of the others - and while the filmmakers did choose to use lower-light levels for lighting their scenes, on my plasma the details were still quite noticeable in all of those darker scenes. I wonder how well a film like this holds up when being viewed on an LCD (grayer black levels), or even on your DLP if the contrast is set so high (90). Yes, you'll see the image, but with such a higher contrast level the 'dark look' the filmmakers chose won't be readily apparent at that setting (and dark scenes will looked 'washed out').

And at that '90' setting, on your DLP I bet brighter films like RV, or Ultraviolet, look way too bright, and over-contrasted.

Ironbull,
I am not looking to benefit. I am just curious to see how others have their display setup. Just to have some fun with it. (Yaknow... take your's or anybody elses settings for that matter, throw them on my set and see what I get.) Plus it all gives us a little chance to share what we watch our flicks on.....i dunno. Just tired of talking about the same stuff over and over again. (LIKE BLU RAY AND GRAIN!!!! UGH.)

Hendrix,
Believe it or not. But I get stunning Blacks from these settings! I KNOW!!! I am quite shocked by this myself!!! Just as I am shocked at YOUR settings! haha. And "NO" the picture is far from being washed out. Quite the opposite!!! Very good detail! AVP. was BLACK....so BLACK, i couldnt even make out what was going on half the time...

LOL - EXACTLY! And part of the reason is because you have your contrast set too high, and probably didn't watch the film with the lights out (the way I always watch movies), so as to provide the deepest contasting image possible. And of course, the KURO plasma's tech provides the deepest black levels, while maintaining accurate shadow detail, color, and clarity.

You should experiment with setting your contrast level much lower than 90%, and see the difference, which is more noticeable with the lights out (like a theater).

Do your settings go into minus? Mine do. I have not looked at my settings for a while, I set them using DVE and left them at that!(I used to be a constant tweaker and forced myself to leave my settings alone) So I don't remember off hand what they are.
I like color temp at 2 for medium warm.
Sharpness is like minus 17.

Hendrix,
This thread is not a debate. But just for you love. "Yes I watch ALL of my movies in the dark." And like I said before^^^^ I was quite puzzled too by the fact that I could push this level so high and get a STUNNING picture. It is reference.

Kudos for Kuro! GET THEM WHILE THERE STILL BEING MADE BY PIONEER.( I just read that they will be outSOURcing their panels in the next...uhm...2 years.) Nice set BTW.!

Hey bladerunner... the panels on forthcoming KURO plasma will be supplied by Panasonic's production (who, along with LG, produce the most plasma panels). However, the KURO tech itself (all of Pioneer's proprietary features, processing, etc) will still be done by Pioneer itself (with improvements from year to year).

It's the same with Sony... their LCD panels have been supplied by Samsung (and next year they are switching to Sharp), but all of their processing/features tech is thru Sony's own BRAVIA engine. And Sony is also moving into OLED production, hoping to bring a 27" size (and larger) by January's CES show. Toshiba is also going to be in OLED tech and supply models.
