Having just bought the 50" Panasonic 700u Plasma and a new PS3 I've finally made the jump to Blu-Ray!! Why did I WAIT SO LONG!!! -) My main question is this: Why doesn't Blu-Ray come out with the Extended versions of movies that's already out
on Standard Definition dvds? For example: Black Hawk Down has a 3-disc version loaded with extras while the only Blu-Ray version I have seen is just the bare bones(movie with a few extras) Some other examples are:
The Rock Criterion version
Pearl Harbor Vista series
Troy 4-disc directors cut
These are just a few, but does anyone know if Blu-Ray will eventually release these "bonus filled" versions??

It's called milking the cow, rickah88. Remember, a lot of those extended/Director's cuts came out later to much later after its theatrical release counterpart was released on SD DVD. The double-dip can be expected in any format you choose, so make your purchases with caution.

The uncut version of Live Free or Die Hard came out the same day as the regular DVD. For some odd reason Fox chose not to release the uncut version on Blu-ray.

As far as I understand it, Criterion licenses the use of films from other studios for a specific period of time, which has the unfortunate effect of making some of their releases collector's items very quickly. Therefore, Criterion and Touchstone (IIRC) would need to work out an agreement where Criterion could reissue The Rock (or Armageddon) on Blu Ray with the same specs as before.

Long story short?

I'd hang onto the regular def version until it's announced and in my hands.

uh, jason? the disney blu-ray release of "the rock" basically has all of the criterion extras.

as for not having director's/extended/unrated cuts...

1) disney and warner have a general policy of not releasing unrated cuts (in part due to their pillar membership in the MPAA)

2) fox has had a terrible track record with blu-ray (high prices, fewer/no extras, etc.)

3) video branching issues with BD+ Live software and hardware compatibility.

FYI - SONY has several BD releases in "unrated" or "director's cut" editions - Hellboy, Hostel, Underworld etc... but also edited (and/or PG-13) versions on BD, like Ultraviolet, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Casino Royale, etc - when there exists R/unrated-type versions on DVD (or even on BD in other regions(!), such as the "unrated" Casino Royale BD available outside of North America).

I noticed that when I watch HD DVDs the movie menu is real smooth and usually slides in either from the side or from the bottom of the screen while the movie is playing. When I watch First Blood on Blu ray the menu POPS down from the top real quick and seem to be as smooth as the HD DVDs. Is this just the one BR movie that does it or do all BR have the same type of "POP" menu?
