Not a Blu ray story but will impact blu ray all the same.

Warner Bros Jeff Bewkes has said they intend to cut movie production by half by 2009.

It's probably a good idea since most movies are not Scottish, which means they're all crap!

So, they intend to focus on Blu-Ray by cutting their movie production in half therefore creating less new releases to put out on Blu-Ray? When they say something like this:

Quote:
To see the studio's income growing Bewkes believes they need to focus on Blu-ray adoption and need to expand the distribution of both VoD and DVD simultaneously.

He makes contradicting statements. It seems they are going to focus more on standard DVD and VoD. How can they focus on Blu-Ray adoption by having LESS new releases on their schedule?

US...kick ass...perhaps...

But in building my HD-DVD library over the past number of months, with titles from around the world, there is some serious cinema happening outside of North America

La Haine from France, to name but one, is a darkly foreboding tale of the ethnic/immigrant violence that has hit Europe in the past few years...yeah, it's subtitled, but no big deal...

Have you ever heard of "Rails & Ties" with Kevin Bacon and Marcia Gay Harden or "Chaos Theory" with Ryan Reynolds and Emily Mortimer? They are two recent movies Warners are releasing this month on DVD. But neither movie did much at the box office this last year. My guess is that WB will be cutting back on their smaller, less-profitable films, the ones they will never release on Blu-ray, anyhow. While this will make the studio more mainstream, less adventurous, and probably more stale, it will help increase their revenue flow. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. have the largest catalogue of back titles in Hollywood to release on BD, as evidenced by "Cuckoo's Nest" and "Cool Hand Luke" coming our way soon.

SpoonieG, everyone knows that it's the home media market is where they make their money. It's a checks and balance system. DVD sells more than any source of home entertainment for movies with bonus features but not in HD, VoD is only for rental purposes for those not interested in bonus features or HD audio, and Blu ray is TrueHD with HD audio capabilities and for the many with PS3s or 2.0 profile SAs an internet option. To ignor all avenues of revenue would not be in the best intrest of the company.

If that's the case well VoD and DVD fall in the same catagory more so with VoD. Not all new VoD releases will be day and date with DVD.

The Bucket List, for example, will not be released day and date, there’s too much money to be made on DVD. It doesn’t take Karnak to guess that The Dark Knight and Harry Potter will probably follow suit.

John,

Chaos Theory was excellent! I have been intrigued by Blockbusters film festival releases! I enjoy a lot of the B movie and foreign stuff lately. Cleaner the newest to DVD release is also a decent rental. I liked, but did fair so well in the reviews. That makes me wonder if they will ever do the Red Violin in HD!

Reaggie,

I have "Chaos Theory" on my desk now, and I hope to get at it sometime soon. But my point was that it didn't make much money. It played in my area for about a week, and looking it up just now at IMDb, I see that it made a total of $237,958 at the box office. It will undoubtedly make more than that on DVD, but it's still inconsequential to WB.

It's a shame to see these smaller films go, but studios are in business to make money in mass markets, not just please a few discerning viewers. Life is unfair but we live with what we've got.
