I'd really like to pull the trigger on getting a Bluray device, but didn't really want a game system. Is there any standalone in the works that will be a decent price, never be obsolete(can be upgraded via usb port), and out by years end? Or do I just buy the PS3? 40 or 60 Gig? Thanks for the help!!

I have a 60GB PS3 and really enjoy it. It serves me as a game system, internet browser, photo viewer, media hub, and movie player.
That being said, if you aren't a gamer and those other functions don't interest you, a standalone BD player is your best bet. Prices are already starting to come down, and you have quite a few choices with Sony, Samsung, Sharp, LG, ...etc
Plus with a stand-alone, you will have better audio and picture options and more flexibility.
just my 2-cents good luck

kristof I was in the same dillema as you are right now and did a lot of looking around for a BR player. I just went ahead got the 40gig PS3. I guess really it depends on how long you are willing to wait for 1)an upgradable standalone and 2) prices to drop to what you consider acceptable or both. I haven't had any problems with my PS3 yet and, since I have a wireless router, it upgraded the minute I turned it on. I play some games but so far I have only played Ninja Gaiden Sigma and have only watched First Blood BR.

If you only want just a Blu-Ray player then wait. You'll be able to get a stand alone player worth owning for less then $400 by the holidays. If you are interested in video games as well, then you should probably just get an Xbox 360 and still wait for a stand alone player.

As much as this pains me to say it. I have been contemplating the PS3 myself. URGGG! Yuck... OK, now back to reality. I would consider the PS3, only if it was not made by Sony. It seems like the only logical choice right now. The Panasonic BDP 50 is still too much money! That would be my first choice. I can hold off and make do with my BD-ROM for now.

i had a 40 gig ps3. updated to 140gig for free (dotn ask), and played with the media stuff and everything just to try but mainly for movies. had for about 4 months, still wanted a SA player, for tons of reasons and liked using the media features and gaming on the 360 better anyhow.
anyways unless you wait untill the final spec players which will cost about 600. best player is the panny bd30 which ofcurse is only 1.1 spec. but i just sold my ps3, picked up the Samsung 1500. is 1.1 with nic port and upgradeble to 2.0 later this year says samsung. even though im fine with 1.1. price was 330.00 with 100$ gift ard at walmart. player is solid, a little faster than the panny, which had the best reviews for an SA player.
now im finally happy.

just a different angle. if this blu-ray thing goes the way of hd-dvd and umd... ,you will be able to unload a ps3 for more money than a standalone....atleast you would think so. so i would have to rec. the sony as the safest bet. and throw a game in it, you may like it.

Yup, works the same way. But I prefer TVersity, which also works with XBox 360 too.
