View profile »High Definition is a significant upgrade over standard definition with almost 5 times the resolution, higher dynamic contrast range, better color saturation and accuracy, less artifacts... and for disk media, enhanced audio and often interactive features. J6P seems to care, else I'd be able to rent the Blu-rays I want at my local video store without them being out all the damn time!
Anyway, you keep buying those DVDs while I'll look forward to this: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html

Blu-Ray renters are hardcore PS3 fanboys, not your average J6Ps.

View profile »Wow Deadmeat, I think we found your problem, you need to visit the eye doctor. Maybe you have cataracts?

But even on a 720-resolution set, a 20/20 pair of eyes from an appropriate distance should be able to tell the difference in a real high-def movie and a standard-def one. If you seriously cannot tell any difference, more power to you. Let HD alone and be happy with SD. And the rest of us will continue to appreciate the improvements we see in HD.

If you have a tv thats a 26 inches or an EDtv then you can't tell the difference.
If you have a 32in or above then you need to get your eyes checked.

View profile »But even on my old Infocus X1 (600x800) without all the pixels being used because of the aspect ratio, the first time I saw the Discovery Channel HD on it, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. I had never seen a DVD produce such detail, although the display was almost DVD resolution. The difference was dramatic and surprising.
Then I bought the Opoma HD80, and any DVD played on it looks like crap @ 130" with 12 to 14 feet of viewing distance, which is why I would never buy a DVD today... even in the throw away bins at Walmart. But yes, many Blu-rays and HD DVDs also look like crap on it too, but they're getting better. CMOS and CCD technology continues to leap ahead every year, and I expect soon film will be dead. But this technological progress also improves the transfers of film material as well, so I suspect we'll see a lot of re-releases of current HD catelog movies as the years pass buy.
This is why I tend to rent much more than I buy - plus there aren't a lot of great movies released on HD at the moment that are worth owning. So combined HD DVD and Blu-ray I only own about 200 movies, and probably about 20% of those I consider crap (mostly transfer-wise) and regret my buying decision. LOL

View profile »Deadmeat, why then were you a long time HD DVD fanboy (to the extreme) on all the major internet forums if you couldn't tell the difference between standard def and high def? That's just weird.
