XMB = Xenolithic Monoclinal Basalt. It's a geological term for a type of volcanic rock that really shouldn't be there. I'm not sure what this has to do with the PS3 update however....

Edit: Gosh it just occurred to me that this could describe a brick!

Even though I prefer Skyhawk's definition of a brick, XMB is Sony's CrossMediaBar, a graphical interface:

Thanks John. I guess I'll keep mine on 2.35 since I don't see any significance in the latest updates.

I wish they would do an update where I can watch 1080P movie trailers right off Apples website. Now that's an update!

2.42 now available. Here's the scoop:
The PLAYSTATION®3 system software update may include security patches, new or revised settings and features and other items, which will change your current operating system. We encourage you to check this page from time to time for software updates and to always maintain your system to use the latest version of the system software.

An update to the PS3™ system software was released on July 30, 2008. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 2.42.

This update corrects a problem that prevented a limited number of PS3™ systems from starting properly after updating to version 2.40.

For those users who have updated to version 2.40 and have experienced the problem where the XMB™(XrossMediaBar) screen does not appear, or no images are displayed on the screen, please contact Consumer Services at 1-800-345-7669.

We have confirmed that for those users who have successfully updated to version 2.40 and are able to start the PS3™ system, this problem will not occur on your PS3™ system.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and appreciate your understanding and continued support.

Ok, so who here is taking one for the team on this new update.

Sorry, but I am not about to Brick my Pos3. I felt bad for those who lost their units on the 2.4 update.

Sorry Mike, but once I read Horror stories of Brick Players because of BIOS updates I then stop all the updating until I see a proven track record again. I don't want a $300 door stop, and to be honest, had they actually finished the specs for BR from the get go, maybe these constant updates wouldn't be needed.

I have never flashed or updated any electronics like DVD players in my life, I even stopped updating my HD-DVD players. MY pc thats a different story, but with a PS3, I don't want it dead and have to send it in only to be given someone's rejected unit as a replacement. I bought mine new so I would expect a new replacement in return.
