And amongst howls of derision from certain rude, aged members of the UK press, the demonstrations looked pretty damn great in our expert opinion. And anything that's going to save us the ignominy of having to replace our entire DVD collection with Blu-ray has to be worth giving a go.

The last paragraph...
Quote:So they're as good as Blu-ray, will polish your existing DVDs to within an inch of their lives and offer access to Kaleidescape's extensive Movie Guide database - what's not to like? Erm, how about the respective $4,300 and $3,000 price tags, oh and the fact that to make them work you'll need to already have the $10,000 Kaleidescape System installed. Suddenly, Blu-ray doesn't look so pricey.
Defend away.
Jason, Hooked on Phonics worked for me!

View profile »Actually Sigma Design's regular high-end upconversion chip. This is a Kaleidescape DVD player review, but the reviewer was mentioning the Toshiba Super Upconversion demo he saw a couple days ago.
Quote:But, I think the question we have to ask is, How well will the Toshiba version at $200 sell!
Build it for $130($70 over regular DVD players in terms of BOM), retail it for $200.

View profile »It might be good for people that already have extensive DVD collections, but then they will have Blu-ray players with built-in super-upconversion technology for standard DVDs, and a lot of people will have extensive Blu-ray disc collections.

View profile »Nope. Refer to my "The Impact of Blu-Ray's very high royalty on Blu-Ray drive's MSRP" thread.
Blu-Ray's very high royalty prevents any $200 Blu-Ray player from hitting the market. Because no matter how hard you cut cost, you still face high royalty cost.
Quote:It's already slowly starting to happen where you can get a player for this price when you factor in the $100 giveaway gift card at some stores. Plus, Blu-ray movies might be expensive via retail, but online you can get them for a really good price if you shop around.
You can do the same with DVD.

View profile »Plus, how do you know that these articles are indeed factual? Even though the format war is over, there are still people trying to put an end to Blu-ray.
Yes, you can find DVDs cheaper too. But I've looked, because I can play DVDs on my player, and I found that they aren't much cheaper than Blu-ray if you know where to look. Heck, I've even seen places where the DVDs were more expensive than BD.

I believe what's already happening over some article. You do realize that Wal-Mart has had $200 players already? Sure, it was $300 with a $100 gift card, but the gift card is practically like cash since you can buy anything at Wal-Mart.
Yeah, looks like royalties are really coming into play there.
