Mozilla = all the X employee's of Netscape, and we all know where Netscape went. Yes, it magically turned into Mozilla! Don't let all the hype fool you folks. I work with nerdy developers all day, and while a few praise Firefox, we all know each browser has its fair share of development issues. Firefox has plenty of issues for us developers to deal with, and so do all the others. To be honest, browsers really are a matter of choice as there really isn't one to beat all others. Bells and whistles don't make good browsers, developing for all browsers and not having to "fug" things is what makes browsers good -- so far, none of them are that friendly.

This is only because developing a web rendering engine by following W3C's specs is a bit like interpreting the constitution. Look at CSS for example. The buggers in the details.

Edit: Netscape or not, I hope you aren't suggesting that Trident is better in any (technical) way than Gecko, or ever was at any time in history.

Lets just say that Microsoft didn't initially win the browser war with Netscape by offering better CSS or HTML standard support. I'm still waiting for Trident to understand what the freakin' <abbr> is in HTML, fix their big list of CSS1 bugs, and offer complete CSS1 support. After all, CSS2 has been out for how long now? 6 or 8 years? A complete implementation of CSS2 will not likely be offerred by Microsoft in my life time. But I'm hoping for CSS1 within the next 10 years.

I've never really got into using Firefox yet. Nothing that great about it, for me anyways. I'm still using IE6, and it works just fine for me. I've used Safari from time to time, but mainly use IE6. I use Safari, because I also have a MAC in the house. I have windows version as well, it seems to do the job. Netscape... Wow I haven't heard that word since windows98se!

I used Netscape 4.0 - 4.8 in the past. Then they merged? with AOL and the reviewers said they took a big turn for the worse.
I had used MS IE and didn't like it as much. But I eventually changed over as Netscape 4.8 became outdated. Then I tried Firefox. It IS the old Netscape (updated)!
I read a few other reviews and Firefox 3 looks really good.

I took Tim's suggestion a few years ago and started using Avant. It's based on Microsoft Explorer, so it's entirely compatible, but it's faster--faster, in fact, that any other browser I've tried, including Opera--and it's more customizable than any other browser, too. It's fast, compact, and good-looking. Thanks, Tim. I've been completely satisfied.

I have to agree with Skyhawk.

The compatibility of basic CSS, Javascript etc. is a disaster on say IE6 (plus it has a lost of security issues.) It got better on IE7 but still not close to FireFox and Safari 3. Read any book on CSS and javascript and you will find they have dedicated whole chapters on how to make your valid code work on Internet Explorer browsers using various hacks. Not a good sign!

If your developers create code in MS environments (.NET, Windows, Visual Studio) they just might like Internet Explorer. However, outside that bubble it is a whole different story.

MS missed the train (or boat for that matter) when they decided to stop all browser development with IE6 back in 2001. Once again they had to realize they could not control the Internet and released IE7 a staggering 5 years after 6 in October 2006.

Hopefully IE8 will be on level with the competition.

Lastly, IE6 users please read http://www.savethedevelopers.org/ - It really is important to upgrade your browser. Not only for the developers sake but for your own Internet security.

Ha Ha love the blurb on IE6. I still use it because it works. Some may say it is full of bugs, but it has never given me any issues. I think the only site it may not display everything is Facebook. I don't really care for half of the crap anyways. Worst case situation is that I use Safari.

Reggie sounds like an old man, "In my days we used Prodigy . . . AND WE LIKED IT!!!"

Reggie is a prime example of why progress can take so long. Henning is right, people using any version of IE should upgrade asap! Sure, us developers would love it if everyone would and it would save us from hours of creating bandaid solutions to make IE6 happy. Since IE is the #1 browser on the market it would be doing a huge favor for many people in the development and security industry if users would keep the IE software up to date.

Where I work, last year our client base was 100% IE, unfortunately, 90% of that client base was on IE6 and did not see a foreseeable future in which they would upgrade soon because it is not cost effective. Saddly, many big businesses out there need to keep up with upgrades in order to set the trend. You may think big business needs to lead by example and for the most part they should in the IT world, but it also takes the average users to keep things progressing. If you are hanging on to old copies of whatever browser because it works, then I can assure you all them new upgraded browsers out there work even better! So please, do us IT geeks a big favor and keep your web software updated.

Thanks.
