LMAO, personaly I think deadmeat is entertaining. I don't like Sony and you guys keep falling hook, line and sinker for these threads. Smarten up and don't reply if he bothers you that much.

Again, post as soon as you guys see a $200 name brand bd player because I'm ready to expand my movies(dvd, hd dvd.....blu ray).

Well, this is interesting. Given that Sony does not know the future of BD, why sell yourself short when you can ALSO do what your competitors do: Movie download!
Of course, if Sony was really SURE about BD being the NEXT BIG THING... it would be blasphemy for them to copy Apple, Microsoft, and the rest of the Media Monsters out there, doing video downloads.
It's all about covering your assets. Sony is no different.
The more the merrier: If enough of these monkeysuits offer digital movie downloads, better for us that they grab our attention with cheaper/better deals! Keep the competition aplenty!

Or alternatively, Sony might think their game console is in competition with Microsoft's XBox 360, and they want to offer similar features and services... not to mention break into some video rental market revenue at the same time?

I could be wrong, but just a thought.

You mean they accept they'll never get close to the Wii in terms of console dominance?

Given how PS3 owners make up 88% of Blu-Ray movie purchasers, this would be devastating to growth of Blu-Ray.

PS3 users are indeed heavy downloaders(downloads firmware updates and demos all the time) and are very brand-loyal, so a significant chunk of them would defect to PSN downloading once it goes online.

I guess Sony realizes that Blu-Ray won't replace DVD and that they could not hold off going downloading any longer, while Apple and Micrsoft keep expanding.

And you accuse Deadmeat of twisting things - we were talking about PS3 vs Xbox 360

Ok I'll be more specific

Sony accept that they are no longer leaders in the console wars and rather than try to compete with the Wii in terms of sales which they obviously can't, they have accepted that if they don't want to be last in a three way sales battle they will concentrate on trying to compete against the Xbox in an attempt to come second in a three way sales battle.

downloadable media has one major hurdle.which to be honest,i cant believe anyone has really touched up on

BANDWIDTH

most countrys have adopted a fair usage policy, which results in customers in the minority paying for unlimited usage, whilst the majority will opt for full speed capped gigs or slower speeds with unlimited gigs

this isnt just regional,its global

there is only so much bandwidth available and there is gonna have to be a hell of a lot more of it available for mass market, ultra fast for the larger hd media

the other thing that is getting ignored aswell, until MS,SONY are delivering full 20 to 40+gig 1080p content, then they cant be competing with blu....coz thats what blu delivers
