Sony said that "Hancock" would be one of the first movies to be streamed directly to its TVs and this before the release of the DVD version.

I'm guessing this will be DVD quality video then, not HD? I hope to be able to download Hancock on my PS3 also. It would be dumb if you couldn't download it because you don't have a Sony TV.

No specific details yet.

No doubt the movies in the Playstation Store will be in HD.

Also, Sony could choose to release their own movies before the "normal" release date making their platform more attractive compared with say XBOX and Apple which don't own movie studios like Sony does.

I doubt they would offer HD download. Otherwise, won't they be shooting themselves on the foot, by keeping buyers away from BD, and attract them to HD download, instead?
How will Sony's offer of HD download further widen the stronghold of BD to consumers? Unless, of course, they offer HD movie downloads, not available to BD.... again, why not offer a movie on BD?

...Steve jobs owns a considerable percentage of disney shares.

May i remind you Pirates of the carribean 2 was one of the first movies available on the iTunes movie store. So were the Pixar films.

Absolutely true. He has a lot of power at Disney but Apple doesn't have the final say as Sony has with Sony Pictures.

However, it sure looks like the download competition is heating up.

Sure, but how does Sony's digital movie download, help their push for BD (media) ownership? I can see them making money on the PS3 for movie downloads-n-bd-player in one box, but what happens to the BD partners only selling standalone bd players? Moreover, once the movie is seen via HD download, what's to pursue a consumer to buy a bd movie, that's already been seen? Sure you got the hidef movie collectors out there, but that crowd is but a small percentage of the rest of the casual viewers.

I don't see how Sony can push BD media, if they suddenly offer HD movie downloads. I can see them offering SD movies, instead.

Exactly...my point is, you have a format that hasn't really taken off as expected, and you are launching yet another one? Blu-ray winning the 'format war' is one thing, downloads is another...but it could be an alike service like Xbox Live...so whatever...

Apple and XBOX offer HD so I'm sure Sony will as well.

However, it will not be of the high standard that is Blu-ray.

Good point. 720p vs 1080p. Question is... would consumers CARE enough to purchase a 1080p of the same movie, already seen as 720p... for almost SEVEN TIMES the price (assuming hd download for $3 & BD movies for $20)?
Keep in mind, a jump to 1080p visual candy, IS NOT A DRAMATIC JUMP from 720p (to the naked eye... all good 'n dandy in tech specs only). Not even TWICE as better than 720p. So what's to convince consumers to buy that 1080p movie almost seven times the asking price of a HD movie download that's ALREADY BEEN SEEN?

Again, my dollar figures above are in the low figures.
